The silent updater adds these system changes to XP (I assume Vista, 7 and 8 are similar):
Launched updater.exe[2648]
Low-level Drivers and Services
Registry Key hkey_local_machine\system\CurrentControlSet\services
Subkey MozillaMaintenance has been added
Launched firefox.exe[3128]
Low-level Drivers and Services
Registry Key hkey_local_machine\system\ControlSet001\services
Subkey MozillaMaintenance has been added
For anyone (like me) who has a need to keep manual control of Firefox 12's updates, here is a screen shot showing what to do (under Options.) Additionally, you could also disable the MozillaMaintenance service (which I have chosen to do.)
I'm also a manual updater, but I guess Mozilla is trying to address the update complaints. Chrome has been doing silent updates for a while.
The ESR version does not have the Maintenance Service.
*Note that if you unchecked "Install Maintenance Service" during install,
the "Use a background serivce to install updates" box will not be in the Advanced - Update tab.

True, but when I manually updated via the internal FF 11.0 updater, I was not offered the option to bypass the installation of the updater service. So some will see the option, many will not.

I installed version 11 something on my laptop and it crashed, three times. After that I removed it and installed Opera.
Have they fixed the problem of crashing now in FF?

I've never had such a problem with any version of Firefox, PL. V.11 was absolutely rock solid for me, on my laptop, Windows desktop and Ubuntu desktop. It may be that you have a plug-in that was causing you the problems.

I can't figure out FF so it will keep my tabs open. In Opera, I have every webpage I use and everyone stays up on the top until I close it. Even when I close Opera.

You can also uninstall the Mozilla Maintenance Service by running C:\Program Files\Mozilla Maintenance Service\Uninstall.exe
Thanks for that! Did not know that existed!
FWIW... I have never had any FF crashes either. It's been my fav for quite some time. (I am running Chrome at work because I want some experience with it. But I don't like it as well as FF.)
