DVI - no signal
External monitors (tried 2 now) plugged into my laptop keep displaying a DVI No signal message (as well as video cable unplugged) and the color is all blue/greena and yellow as though it's missing red. Occasionally the right color comes through. The color is correct on the laptop screen. Ideas?

Post the make and model of the laptop. I am assuming that you used the appropriate key combination to active the external monitor port.

Which type are the monitors? LCD or CRT. You should try a different cable,

I didn't try a different cable because both external monitors I tried worked with another laptop (same make and model but about 6 mos older).
monitor is HP S2031
laptop is Toshiba Satelite L3050

I did not find an L3050 model, only an L305D. The L305D does not have a DVI port, only a VGA port. If you are using a VGA to DVI adapter, the adapter might be the problem. Try an adapter that you know works.

I am set up for dual display so we're set there.
RE: the VGA vs DVI - I'm not using an adapter, just the cable that came with the monitor (they sent 2 and the one I have plugged in is the only one that fits so it must be a VGA since you found that my laptop doesn't have a DVI). So the fact that it says No DVI signal must not be the problem.
Any other ideas for what's causing the color issue are welcome

The monitor may have a setup option to select the video input. Try changing that setting.

It was originally set for DVI but I changed it to VGA. No difference.
Someone else is suggesting the possiblity of the port on my laptop not being good. If that's it where do I buy a new port?

It is possible that the VGA port on the laptop is bad. Note: Check the port connector. A VGA connector will have 3 rows of pins, with a total of 15 pins. Also, check the cables and connectors to make sure that there are no broken or bent pins.
If the VGA port is bad, you would probably have to replace the motherboard in the laptop. That would likely not be worth the expense - a new laptop with better specs would not cost that much more, even assuming that you could find a replacement motherboard.

Not what I wanted to hear but I will talk with Toshiba and see if there's anything they can do. Doesn't hurt to ask

FWIW, USB-to-VGA/DVI adapters are available.
I've used this one before, (works great):
