Laptop randomly restarts to "No bootable device" error
System Info:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit
Processor: AMD C-50 Processor, AMD64 Family 20 Model 1 Stepping 0
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 1770 Mb
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6250 Graphics, 256 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 223012 MB, Free - 166291 MB;
Motherboard: Acer, Aspire 5253
Antivirus: Outpost Security Suite Pro, Updated and Enabled
This laptop is just under a year old. For the third time in the past two months it has suddenly restarted while it's not even being used, but it restarts to "No bootable device. Insert boot disc and press any key."
I go into the BIOS, the HDD is first in the boot sequence but no HDD is listed; the system doesn't see it. Shutting down and letting it sit for an hour or so may or may not work, and if it does, the system crashes again with the same error. After a couple rounds of this, it will eventually boot up and run fine with no further issues, and the HDD showing in the BIOS as it should.
Today it doesn't seem to want to come back. I keep rebooting, and within a minute or two after it's finished, it restarts itself to the "No bootable device" error.
Any idea what's causing this issue? Malware scans turn up clean.

I'd say it is time to run the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostics. The Ultimate Boot CD has diagnostics for mast drive manufacturers.

Thanks, jdc. Downloading it now.
In the meantime if anyone happens to know a cause or possible causes, feel free to chime in.

If the bios can't see it, then the hard drive is probably dead. Since it's under a year old, see if you can get it replaced under warranty.

Dropped/banged, liquid damage, bad ram, flaky motherboard, failing hard drive, ...

That's exactly how the story ended.
