    Plextor PX-850SA Burner Issue

I have the plextor PX-850SA burner on my computer and I tried burning a few dvds for the first time with this burner. I tried 3 dvds and different files and after a few minutes after the burning process, it stopped and gave me buffer underrun errros. I use Roxio CD And DVD Easy Creator software and there is a buffer underrun protection box to check but this option isn't available when I go to begin the burning process. Anyone have any suggestions how to correct this?

Did you try burning at a slower speed? did you see if there is a firmware update for the drive?

I don't care for Roxio either. I usually use Nero, but you can try infrarecorder for free.

Hi, Midknyte. I wasn't sure which forum to post this question. I always burn at the slowest speed. I just updated the firmware and tried again and the buffer underrun still can't be selected. So I downloaded the freeware burning program that you suggested and tried that. I still received an error when trying to burn using that program, as well. I always used the same roxio program that I used on my old computer but with a different dvd burner and it never gave me any issues. I purchased this plextor drive when I built my computer a few years ago but this is the first time I am trying to burn using it on my current computer. I am not sure why I keep getting errors.

So you're using the Roxio that came with the drive?

Did you check the IDE mode of the hard drive controllers in Device Manager? Make sure that they aren't in PIO mode.

What is your current computer setup?

I can't remember exactly but I think I am using the same Roxio program that I was using on my old computer.

The IDE mode is set to DMA in device manager.

My computer config is win xp pro, Intel 3 Ghz cpu, 4 GB memory.

How did you set your SATA ports in the bios? IDE compatibility mode or something similar?

Make/model of the motherboard might help too.

Did you try different brands of blank discs? Did you use both CDs and DVDs?

Did you install Plexutilities with the drive?

Midknyte, If you are referring to the onboard sata/ide control mode in my bios setting, it is set to IDE.

My motherboard is a GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P.

I tried both DVD and CD and both gave me errors.

I never heard of Plexutilities so no it is not installed on my computer.

    If applicable,
Refrain from using the mobo's GSATA ports.
    Cheers.

Shinma, how would I use this plextor sata drive if I wouldn't use any of the sata ports on MB?

The manual shows you have SATA 0 to 5 and 2 GSATA connectors on the motherboard.

The 2 closes to the ram connections and the edge of the motherboard are the GSATA that need to be avoided.

Page 7 in the manual shows where they are.

And on page 22 they are
    9) GSATA2_0/1

Shinma, if you are asking if I am utilizing either of the 2 gsata ports on my motherboard, no I am not.

    Train, thanks for that info.

The Plexutilities should have come with the drive. I don't have a Plextor drive to test with, though.

You could try the drive in another system to see if it still has the same problems. If so, maybe it's just a bad drive?

I contacted Plextor online tech support and he asked me what my region was set at in device manager. I told him that nothing was selected. He told me to change it to region 1. I tried burning another cd after that change and it still gave me errors.

Midknyte, since I purchased this drive as an OEM, I don't believe it came with the Plexutilities utilities. I don't have another computer to test this drive. My drive can read cd and dvd's so I doubt it is a faulty drive. My other burner in my old system was an ide drive. This is my first sata burner. I am wondering if a setting or something isn't configured properly but I suppose we made certain that my bios settings were configured correctly. I am not sure what could be causing these errors.

If that's the case, then you shouldn't have received the Roxio software either. Hmm.

The region shouldn't have made a difference in burning.

You already said the SATA controllers are set to IDE, not AHCI or RAID. And you said you're not using the GSATA (add-on SATA) ports.

Did you update the chipset drivers?

Midknyte, I am using the Roxio software that I was using with my other burner on my old computer.

Yes, my sata in bios is set to IDE and no I am not using any of the 2 gsata ports on my MB.

No, I didn't update my chipset drivers. Are these drivers pertaining to my motherboard? I don't think I ever updated drivers to a motherboard before. I assume the link you provided is the correct drivers that I need for my motherboard? Do I need to install both of the updates on the link you provided or just one of them?
