[RESOLVED] iphone to projector cable
I am in a computer club and we would like to use a cable to plug into an iphone, ipad, ianything and show it on our projector which has a VGA input.
We bought a cable from the apple store here and it did not work. We took it back and exchanged it and it still did not work.
Does anyone know of a cable that will work or are we just out of luck?
TIA

I don't use anything from Apple, but what I could find out from a quick search is that only certain apps will output to an external monitor or projector. Could that be the problem, that you are using the "wrong" app?

Thanks for the reply SuperSparks.
I was not the one who was trying this cable out but from what I gather we could not get anything from the iphone to display on the screen.
I think maybe we should try to hook the iphone up to our laptop and then send it to the projector. If that would work.
In my search I found a lot of things dealing with resolution. I just thought someone on this site would have had experience with this.

You will have more options and probably success using the laptop to connect to the projector. for best results use the projectors optimum resolution (check manual or online). If there's no info avail on that then try 1024x768 which is often default resolution for projectors.
In those circumstances I find it easier to use a mirrored display rather than extended since not too many programs are capable of automatically dealing with an extended display option... PowerPoint being one noteable exception. With the extended display you're constantly having to drag the open window back and forth from the main screen to the projector's screen.

Sorry to be so dumb but I don't understand the mirrored vs extended display.

mirrored means a duplicate of the main screen and extended means that you see a continuation of the main screen to one side of it (by default to the right). All of these things are configurable in graphics properties accessible in slightly different ways depending which operating system you use (and which graphics drivers are installed)

Gosh! Thanks for the explanation Fink and thanks also to Spyware Dr. for the very nice graphic of how it works.
I would still be interested to know if anyone has tried to do what we want to do with a cable from an iphone to a laptop or projector.
