[RESOLVED] Internet Explorer 7 to 9
Can you update from internet explorer 7 directly to 9?
I had to format a Dell Vista machine and it went back to IE 7. Have been doing lots of updates since then but can't get IE 9 to download.
Keep getting messages that updates have to go in first.
Do I have to try to get IE 8 in first?
Thank you.

I don't know for sure if IE8 is required first, but you definitely do have to have certain updates installed before you can have IE9. Here's a KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2399238
Does it not tell you what updates it needs before it will install?
Nick.

Do the updates first. IE9 should be offered as an update once prereqs are met.

Ok, I have lots of them installed but right now it is failing on Windows Vista Service Pack 1 KB936330
It has failed to install three times now. I'm accepting the service agreement and restarting after each download.
Should I shut McAfee off ?
thanks.

Download and install the Service Packs manually instead of installing through Windows Update. You need to install SP1 first, and then SP2.

You can try shutting off Mcafee if you want.

Ok, I finally got those two service packs in but now when I check for updates it just keeps searching but doesn't find any.
Thank you for the replies

You can check to see if you have this month's updates like KB2621440. If so, then you're probably up to date.

You didn't say if you had 32 or 64 bit, but you can download IE9 and try a manual install as well.

It is 32 bit and I am following the links provided by Midknight - sorry can't check that spelling from here -
Ok, now it is working on 72 important updates so maybe I'm getting there
