Unhappy Vista problems: 'Host process stopped working' AND many 'Pipe state invalid'

Hi, my pc is feeling sad

PC generally running very badly so there are probably many problems - but problems which i can identify are that i receive the error message: host process for windows services stopped working...

I tried to find directions online to fix this and the instructions suggested i look at the event viewer to see which program may be causing the problem. However when trying to open the Event Viewer (or any other app in the admin tools area of the control panel) i get the error message: C:\Windows\System23\eventvwr.msc The pipe state is invalid

I also have a reappearing empty folder which appears on my desktop after most system bootups. I delete it (have used recycle bin and MSDos) but it regularly comes back! (a few months ago Broni worked on this problem with me and deemed it not to be a virus issue and pointed me in this forum direction.)

Can anyone help me with these issues please?

    Thanks

Try running the System File Checker. Go to Start and type "cmd" without the quotes, then right-click cmd.exe and choose "Run as Administrator". Once at the Command Prompt, type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. You may need your Vista disc, though most of the time you don't.

Great thanks... that helped - cleaned up my registry and i can now run event viewer... but eek, it has registered SEVENTY ERRORS so far today (and a few warnings) how would i best go about sorting these out please?

Are they all different errors, or just lots of instances of the same one or two errors? If the latter, post the details here, please.

Have you install SP1, SP2 and all the updates?
