[RESOLVED] AVAST
I have the free edition of Avast anti virus. I have been having download
problems. I may not download at all or say avast service is closed. Other
times it works. What is going on with Avast?

I haven't had any problems with Avast in some time and haven't seen any like you describe lately. I'd try uninstalling then reinstalling it.
VirtualDr email notices are not working.
Check back regularly for responses.

jerryhillman--Avast will often block downloads that it suspects of having malware. As it should.
But here are other ideas.

If no help, please elaborate on "say avast service is closed".

Twice when I sent to download a message said Avast site was closed?
Will keep watching it.

Jerry -
If you can get and post a screen capture of the message, that would be very helpful.

I have been using Avast for many years and this is the first problem.
The message from avast said Avast is closed. Could it be that day
their site WAS CLOSED?

Without seeing a screen capture of the actual message, it is hard to say. Even with one it might be difficult.

Could it be that you have picked up some malware?

"Failure to update. The Avast service is not running"
This is the exact message I just got. Is Avast going to keep running?

Between work, family and friends, I oversee probably 50 to 75 copies of Avast. None have download problems. Your issue could be many things but mostly sounds like a corrupt installation or malware.
If it's not malware (the way to know for sure on this is by following the cleanup procedure via the Intensive Care Forum here), download a fresh copy of free Avast. Also download the Avast Uninstall Utility from here http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Then uninstall Avast from the regular Add/Remove Programs link. Reboot. Run the Uninstall Utility (be very sure of the folder you point it to.) Reboot again. Then reinstall the fresh copy of Avast. Be sure to NOT install Google Chrome as you go through the screens!

But do you still have the problem? Avast server may have been down temporarily.

My avast will not download or uninstall. I copied the following:
*****************************************************
Download aswclear.exe on your desktop
Start Windows in Safe Mode
Open (execute) the uninstall utility
If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
Click REMOVE
Restart your computer
*********************************************************
How do I start Win XP Home is safe mode. Is this necessary?
Should I put the Avast uninstaller in the same folder that Avast is
in, that is the program folder on C: drive then click on it? Or can I
put it in its own folder and click on it? Avast is in the folder it created
when I installed it.

Restart your computer and start tapping [F8]. When you get to a Menu, use the arrow keys to select Safe mode and then press [Enter].

I was avast able to uninstall Avast 6.0 with the avast uninstaller and
install Avast 7.0. This problem seems to be fairly common. Why is it
happening?
