wanted: old AGP 3D video card

My father-in-law has an older desktop PC that I gave him when we upgraded a few years ago. I forget the specs (I'll take a look when I get home), but it's a P4 with an older 4x AGP video card. This setup worked fine for him for awhile, but he bought a Casino Slot Machine game he'd like to play, but didn't check the specs (ya, I know, I've told him a dozen times, you MUST check the requirements and even printed them out for him to give the salesperson to confirm, but he didn't). The cpu & memory will support it, but it says he needs a 3D video card. The store won't allow him to return or exchange it, so I told him I'd try to help.

Does anyone have an old 4x AGP 3D card they would sell inexpensively? (I'll get spec tonight so I'm not wasting anyone's time).

Please let me know, we're visiting them on Christmas and he'd really enjoy playing his new game. He's 78 years old and I'm trying to keep him happy.

    Thanks! and Merry Christmas.

I guess I need some more help please.

I pulled the specs on my father-in-laws PC, it's an oldie, but goodie.
    cpu: Intel P4 3.06ghz 800fsb
mobo: Intel D865GLC socket 478 (an old Gateway PC)
    XP SP3
    2gb Ram

    current video: Radeon 7000 (32mb 4x AGP)

The video specs on the Amazon site list:
    • 32 MB graphics card
    • Multi-display support
    • Excellent 3D performance
    • Supports 3D resolutions (32-bit color) up to 2048x1536
    • Industry leading DVD playback

So does this support 3D? The game software tech said he needs a 3D card, but it looks like it already is.
I have no problem buying him a new card, but want to make sure whatever I buy will work.
Unfortunately, I don't have the Requirements off of the game box, but they were pretty simple (it's only a casino Slot machine game, we're not talking high-end graphics).
He recently replaced the old 19" monitor with a 21" LCD, could that be part of the problem?
I looked in Belarc Advisor, but couldn't find what version of DirectX I installed. I cleaned the HDD and reloaded XP on it last year (Feb. '10) and loaded the latest DirectX at the time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Would this solve the problem:
    ECS N6200A-512DZ-H GeForce 6200 512MB 64-bit DDR2 AGP 8X

    512mb, 64mb DDR2, 8x should give it a healthy kick-in-the-pants, no?

    Thanks!

You don't happen to have the model number for that Gateway PC available do you?

Not only what jdc posted, but how much video ram does the game require.

Avoid the 7000 for anything but basic graphics applications. I bought that one for my first homebuild and it was obvious within days that it was my system's bottleneck. Your system will do nicely with an nVidia 6600GT or 6800/6800GT 4x/8x AGP card - I tried both in my system at the time and the improvement was obvious and immediate. (I wouldn't go with any 7-Series or 8-Series cards, they were designed for PCI-E application and backward-engineered for AGP boards but that's just one guy's opinion.) If you go for the 6600, RivaTuner can be used to unlock the 4 locked pixel pipelines to give you the same performance as the 6600GT for a few dollars less. I preferred the 6800GT for the improved performance I got on some games at the time.

You can still get them on eBay, sometimes. I think the only 6-Series card left being made is the 6200. I have one 6800 left, a used 6800 Ultra with 256MB RAM and a Zalman cooler. Darn thing takes up two expansion slots on the board but it's a sweetheart.

Well, guess I didn't read the rules. I'll make it right - the 6800 Ultra is available for $50 plus shipping, and that's a bargain.
