working on vista O/S now run into blue screens.. ideas ?

The Blue Screen notice is : machine_check_exception which I believe is a registry problem and the fix would be to run a registry fix..

the work I was doing on this PC prior to the blues screen was to remove virus/malware program called Webroot , thru the control panel , turned off IE , & google chrome - installed Firefox browser, turned off or removed Microsoft essentials, and installed AVG free software ..

windows vista no longer has support for IE,, or chrome ,, or essentials .. thought it best to remove ..

so for the windows fix is there a Microsoft based program for this . really don't wan tto purchase any third party software for a registry fix ..
what about sfc /scannow ? I don't have the CD for any missing drivers ..

    When I google machine_check_exception

    I see things like:

    What causes MCE errors?

There most common reason for MCE events to occur are:

Memory errors or Error Correction Code (ECC) problems
    Inadequate cooling / processor over-heating
    System bus errors
Cache errors in the processor or hardware

If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

vista O/S is pretty well toast //.. so bought windows 8.1 to install on this HP laptop HP Pavillion entertainment with 4 Gb ram and HARDdrive is 160 GB ...

I would think I could just boot into the disc on the drive and go from there but the BIOS / even though is set for dvd over c: drive is not recognising the DISC should I install format with windows XP first then upgrade to 8.1 ???

When you attempted to get it to boot from the 8.1 disk, did you shut the computer down then start again? Sometimes these off the shelf computers won't recognize a disk in the drive if you just restart the computer.

The laptop and dvd-cd rom did recognize the the 8.1 disc and even 'tried to install new windows .. but the problem I had with the 8.1 setup there was no area to format laptop and install it., just tried to install over the (now) xp sp2 set up .. BUT when the 8.1 was installing.. it got to the area that found 'no drivers installed' to continue .. drivers for the windows program ..

so had to revert back to windows xp ..

am going to switch over to the XP forum here now as I am running into more problems / set up technicalities .
