Most toolbar installations are added during the installation of programs initiated by user(s). The majority of them are bundled with freeware but occasionally they show up with paid apps too.

The best way to keep them away from your PC is to always install ANY program with extreme care and watchfulness. Read every install screen in detail. Some are very sneaky with the way you opt out of the extra toolbar installation.

This all said, some may still get by and get dumped onto your machine. (I'm careful and I've had a couple get installed on my PCs too over the years.) If that's the case, remove it and warn your fellow posters on any/all bulletin boards you frequent about it. At least then others can benefit from our toolbar woes...

You should also be able to uninstall each toolbar you don't want.
