[RESOLVED] Uncompression of downloaded file failed
I am getting this message when I was trying to install the latest Java 6. I have deleted my current Java version as the Java sites says the older version should be deleted.
After several tries to install the lastest version from their download site, I clicked on their check to see if I have a Java installed and it came back saying I don't have any installed.
However when I check on the "Enable or Disable Add-On" list, I can see Java (TM) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper enabled and I can't delete it. Could this be causing the problem ?
Any help will be greatly appreicated. Many thank.

I think you may just have a corrupted download there. Try downloading Java again.
Nick.

slickcondo--I do not think the presence of an add-on is necessarily indicative whether the associated program is installed or not. You can disable, but not delete, most add-ons.
See here for info about which add-ons can be deleted.

But we may be straying off solving the problem of your not being able to install the latest Java. Did you first "uninstall" the older version--not "delete" but uninstall?
http://java.com/en/download/uninstall.jsp
The term "uncompression" is a little strange. When I visit the Java download site
http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
and download Java, I download an .exe file. That is not a compressed file. Perhaps you should try downloading the .exe from the link I gave to your hard drive and installing the .exe file from there. Be sure to use the correct file for your browser, which I assume is 32 bit.
A product for uninstalling Java is JavaRa.

Yes, my XP is 32 bit and I have tried both ways. Download first the then install and also directly from the Java site to download and run it from there. I just tried to download again from the link you gave here and try to install it. Still the same problem and message I have been getting.

I can't find any uninstall program from this link, only a lot of updates. Did you gave the right link or perhaps I just don't know how to use it. I was going to just run the uninstal from the link to be doubly sure. But can't find the uninstal

There is no such thing as overkill. 'Open fire' and 'is it dead?' are the only sane options when threatened.

This installation package could not be opened. Verify the package exists and you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify it is a valid Windows Installer package.
The update checker link also came back with the same message even for the 32-bit download, which is what my Windows XP is.
Could it be that the Java download site is not wroking properly ??

Have you asked yourself if you really need Java at all? I got fed up with all this sort of nonsense a few years ago, and haven't used it since. I haven't missed it in the slightest.

Most definitely I do for my internet banking. Otherwise I wouldn't be bothered with it.

What do you mean 2 downloads? I'm guessing you need the JRE, not the JDK. I only see one for Windows x86 Offline.
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/ja...ad-400751.html
Windows x86 Offline 15.85 MB jre-6u26-windows-i586.exe
Like I said, you can get the JRE from filehippo as well.

I tried both the Windows x86 Offline and even though my browser is 32-bit, I also tried the 64-bit version.
I've also installed the filehippo and tried the 32-bit and all gave the same result as I mentioned earlier. And it is the JRE I tried

Don't bother with 64-bit if you have a 32-bit OS.

look at the last post on the page and see if that helps.
