Just an update--I tried another file recovery program--File Scavenger--and got similar results to the ones I got with TestDisk/PhotoRec, namely a whole bunch of .JPG files that don't look important. I feel sorry for my customer if she tries to find her personal photos.
I sent for the HP Recovery Disks. They were under $20, so I feel the price was reasonable. There were 5 disks. The instructions weren't perfect: The supplemental disk was not labelled as the supplemental disk, so I was confused when the computer told me to insert the supplemental disk. Also, when I was prompted to insert disks 2 and 3, sometimes nothing happened until I put in the wrong disk and then put in the right one. But, I muddled through and it looks like Windows 7 is reinstalled and the computer is restored to its original factory state.
Now, I'll work on my backlog of weird computer problems I don't feel like fixing and then see if I can clean up my own backup strategy! Thanks, everybody.
