    Ram increase

Good morn. my machine has 512mb of factory installed ram but with 64mb allocated for visual graphics, that nets me only 448mb of ram. the machine has two sticks of 256mb to equal the 512mb minus the 64mb. with supported speed of pc3200 mb/sec, ddr. i have two sticks of 256mb that i want to install with supported speed of 2100 mb/sec. can i mix the two speeds in an attempt to get me around 1000mb. my machine is a compaq presiaro sr163onx with windows xp sp2. thx in advance for any info

    That is a SR1630 NX.
    Crucial says:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...#37;20SR1630NX

    Maximum Memory: 4096MB
    It has 4 slots
Each memory slot can hold DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

A 1 GB stick should do just fine in the first slot. That is the slot closes to the cpu.

Well, you can try it this way.

Remove both sticks, insert new stick, when ready boot up.

When happy, shut down and add one of the old ones.
Boot up and see what happens.

Now as you will be mixing brands one of these may happen.
    1. computer will not boot.
    2. You may have all kinds of wierd hair pulling errors.
    3. It will work just fine, what we all hope for.

After a couple days and no errors or anything shows up, add the last stick and check things out again.

Mismatched ram as you see can cause weird things to happen sometimes.

I don't think you can use your existing PC2100 RAM, that model only seems to support PC3200.
    Nick.
