    Back up IE

    Hi there,

I'm a Firefox fan and have found that the easiest way to back up my profile is to copy the profile to somewhere else. If my FF goes AWOL, I just copy the back-up to the FF/Profile folder. Clunky but it works.

Chatting with a neighbour how is not computer literate, and he told me that his IE (W&) had gone AWOL. I did manage to get it back using System Restore.

However, is there an IE folder (like the FF profile folder, in my case nzdxttk.default) that can be backed-up as easily as the FF profile folder can? And if so, where is it?

    Thanks

    Rex

IE and Windows are integrated together. Other than copying favorites, I know of no way to "backup" IE separately. In my case, I make full system images 2 or 3 times a month. That provides insurance for IE and much more...

Thanks, seems like a good reason to use Firefox. For myself, i also have a Acronis image of my OS so am not concerned about anything going AWOL. But elderly neighbours finally buy a laptop and have no idea how it could (should) be set up with an image. Everything they create is on the same partition as the OS and all the rubbish, factory reset defaults. so if they have to reset, they not only loose everything but also usually receive a heafty invoice from the repair shop. It make me mad.

I could set their computer up better but because i don't have the letters 'Expert' after my name......... On the other hand, I did get some brownie points for using System Restore to get them back on the internet. They didn't even know about SysRestore.

You could probably win some more brownie points by setting them up with automatic backups storing their data on a large external hard drive. Their files would then be safe from the most common forms of data loss for a long time to come.

Totally agree and I will read your links in due course. Problem is, these oldies (I'm not so much younger myself. I act my UK shoe size, not my age!) are happy to plug in the router and printer, but anything like having external HDD and it is becoming more complex.

I would partition their HDD, DeCrap, install an imaging program and image the HDD to one of the partitions, then DeCrap all the Dell crap and image again. And if I was really keen, image the HDD to one of my own external HDD for them. But I also don't know how the local computer guy / shop would set up the computer, probably not like this as it kind of does him / her out of work!

    But what do I know?

Backing up to the same hard drive is better than nothing I suppose BUT, the backup(s) then die with the hard drive.

Again, totally agree. Although the HDD can die, I think they are more concerned with the OS going AWOL. Anyway, I am not the pro (therefore have no street cred) so have to decide to spend the time working with them, if they are prepared to listen to my advice.

Their problem rather than mine, but I hate to see them being fleeced when I know that a little extra care and it can all be solved. They are currently paying for Norton, when I have advised that they can save the money and get equally as good protection from AVG or MSE.

Don't know if I'm an old **** yet, but am certainly am becoming a grumpy old man. There was a great advert for a well known British shoe company a few years ago, the tag line being, 'Act your shoe size, not your age.' Hence the reason I used it above!
