    Question Anti virus renewal C A ?

My CA anti virus will expire in about 6 days- 7 to be exact, the new one they offer has a anti spyware also.

Is there any thing just as good on the free side or should i stay with it? Had it about 8 years or so.

It seems to bog things down some on startup, so have not tried anything else.

Vista 32 bit amd 64 athlon x2 4600,/ / I run spy blaster, super anti spy ware online scan, spy bot, , malwarebytes
    3 drives to scan
    thanks

I have used all three of the ones listed by SpywareDr and was impressed with all...each has their good points and not so good points. Antivir might have the best detection rates but isn't very user friendly (for the average user) in my opinion and you have to be leery of "false positives" so you sure can't be quick to delete any files it says are infected. MSE has a somewhat strange automatic updating procedure (that you can read about on the MSE forums if you wish - basically it's every 24 hrs unless blah, blah, blah) but you can always manually update it a couple of times a day if you wanted to do so since the procedure is quite easy. Avast 5 is working very well for me but I know of two users who removed it from their computers due to "glitches" and both are now using MSE and prefer MSE over Avast. I've put MSE on three laptops and one is running fine but on the other two (including mine) the computers became so sluggish that I uninstalled MSE and both are doing great with Avast 5 (which is quite user friendly in my opinion and checks for updates every four hours and literally tells you when it has updated the virus definitions). I'm running MSE on this old desktop I'm using right now and MSE seems to have no effect on speed and responsiveness of the system.

In other words, for me there's not a clear winner as to which is the best among the three main free AV programs but I'm not sure I'd recommend Antivir to a new user of their program right now. According to what I've read in other forums Antivir is having a few problems with their newly released version 10...don't know if you can still download version 9.0 which I have used and was impressed with. I'm presently not using Antivir but that's only because I uninstalled it to try the new Avast 5 on my laptop. I'm still running the old version of Avast on another computer.

There have been a number of threads in Virtual Doctor discussing antivirus programs...you might be able to search and read a few.

BTW, I previously was a big fan of Computer Associates but it became (to me at least) unreliable and bloated and I quit using CA three or four years ago. If you're happy with it, you can certainly renew it of course. But I think any of the three free ones that have been discussed are as good if not better than CA and a number of other "paid" programs. There are other readers who would disagree with my comment however.

Good luck and why don't you let us know which program you decide on and how it's performing after you install it?

Question Disconnect from the internet when uninstalling av?

    Stupid question?

When you are uninstalling an av program to install a new one, i would think you would download the new one to the desktop, then should you disconnect from the internet to have windows vista or the uninstaller of the program remove the program and then reinstall the new one then reconnect?

I have done it the opposite way and shudder when i am bare?

    sorry for the stupid q

I always like to have the new AV downloaded before doing the uninstall/install routine offline if possible.

    Thanks T

So there may or may not be an issue by doing it offline?

The only issues in IMO, are if you have a firewall in place during this process and that you do nothing but the removal and installation. My method is have the new AV installer file at the ready, uninstall the old one, reboot, make sure the old one is truly gone, install the new one and update it.

FWIW, CA was once an AV to be envied. Lightweight, quick and good protection. Now, the lightweight is gone and quick seems to so hot either. It's still decent protection but several AVs now easily surpass it it the 1st two categories... So yes, you should move on to something else (IMO). I recommend Avast 5. Very nice!

    Question CA AV uni stall?

    1. When you uninstall CA AV are you better off to use their uninstaller or Vista ADD/REMOVE?

    2. Is it necessary to reboot before installing a different av program?

    3. I am going to try Essentials first, and i have it on my desktop.

4.. Should i disconnect from the internet while i am uninstalling and rebooting if that is necessary?

    5. Is it necessary to reboot after installing Essentials or any other av program if i try another one?

    6. I have a few days before CA expires, so i am going to try another one just in case i decide to stay with CA.

    Any questions?

    thks

    1. Use the uninstaller

    2. I would reboot but the uninstaller will probably do that automatically

    3.ok

    4. I would not disconnect. If you're not surfing, downloading files or checking email or opening new, unkown programs/exe's then you're ok.

    5. Yes, but again you will be told to by the installer

    6.ok

VirtualDr email notices are not working.

    Red face Installation?

I just went through the tutorial on Essentials, and it said to remove all anti spy ware programs.

Do i not use any anti spy ware other than Essentials then?

Spyblaster running, superantispyware is online scanner, spybot installed.

    tks

Don't know what program you mean by "Spyblaster." If you're refering to "Spywareblaster" by Javacool Software which installs killbits in the registry to prevent certain downloads it's running fine with MSE on this computer I'm using. Superantispyware Free version "on demand only" should be okay. I do not use SpyBot S & D anymore so someone else will have to give you advice on that.

You cannot run another antivirus or antispyware program that has "real time protection" running in the background with MSE which also has
"real time protection." If you do the programs may conflict with each other and cause significant impairment in the operation of your computer.

    Question

    typo

spywareblaster it is, i see on "answers" forum, comments about spywareblaster to be be run either.
spybot is not real time unless you use "teatimer" it used to be.

never used essentials but it said to remove all so ??????
