[RESOLVED] USB ports partially non-functional
I'm setting up my old P4/Win XP computer as a media server to watch on tv.
I've found that the USB ports no longer function properly. They see thumb drives with no problem but they do not see any other hardware like a USB keyboard or a wireless dongle for another keyboard (or a printer which I used to test it as well).
I've tried the keyboard(s) in other PC's and they work just fine.
One thing I did know from before I decommissioned it a few years ago was that the motherboard also no longer sees my secondary hard drive and I'd removed it since I didn't need it there anyway... I'm thinking it may be a related problem in some way. It's an ASUS p4s800 MB. The hard drive issue was something I tried to solve a few years ago with no success.
(The optical drive is ok too. Both drives are on on the first IDE controller but nothing works on the 2nd... hard drive or optical drive.)
It's not a show stopper but I was hoping to use my old wireless keyboard/mouse with it from my couch across the room. For now I have to use a wired PS2 combo which is just a bit messy and inconvenient.
any ideas?
TIA

USB drivers are corrupted is my thought.
Since it has been in storage, try a clean install.
That would tells us more whether it is hardware or software related.

I sort of did do a reinstall.. I used an Acronis image I'd kept from a few months before I'd stopped using it because I'd wiped the drive before I put it away in storage.

I now also recall that before I put it away I lent it to my neighbor for a few days when her computer broke down and I recall her telling me that she couldn't hook up her printer to it so that may indicate the USB problem manifested itself before I did put it in storage.

Check the ports with a good light.
Found more that one that were damaged. Some things would work, others would not.
Weird way that worked out.

Check in the BIOS Setup too. On some mobos some USB ports are run off a separate chip, and can be enabled/disabled independently.

If all else fails, a $10-$15 USB add-in card might be the answer:

I tried all 6 ports.. none worked. There's nothing in the BIOS that would be related.
The addin card might be an option. I'll look into that.
I also uninstalled and reinstalled the USB drivers... no difference.
I'm pretty sure it's hardware problem. I just can't see why they work for thumb drives but not for any plugin hardware.

I went to the computer shop up the street and bought a USB/pci card. Works just fine.
It was worth the 12 dollars just to avoid any more aggravation
tnks.

That is what I did on the last computer that had a similar problem.
