    Word 2007 can't open old files

    I'm using Office 2007 on Win7 ult 64 bit and I try to open a Word doc that was created using Office 2003, I get a whole slew of errors relating to Normal.dotm.

    * Can't open
    * There was a problem with Normal.dotm
    * XML 5.0 needs to be installed again
    * Would you like to mark the file for rescue... etc
    * Insert install disk and run Repair
    * Can't open (again)

    Then it opens the file!

    This is followed by another series of similar messages when I try to Save the doc, Word freezes and I have to 'End Task.'

    I've reinstalled and run Repair and it might work once, then the same thing starts happening again.

    Anyone?

    Thanks - rev

    Reverend--Perhaps of help http://forums.techarena.in/office-setup/907857.htm
    And this might be a workaround
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
    to at least allow you to open the old files.

    Jim:

    Maybe they should come out with 'Office Viewer.'

    I'll try deleting per your referenced thread but I don't buy it that Normal.dotm is corrupt because I can create and save New docs just fine, it's only docs written in Word 2003 that give me problems - and they used Normal.dot. (no 'm')

    Thanks!

    Office File Converter Pack
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

    Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

    Take of the problems I had like that.

    Reverend--

    You probably know there is Excel Viewer, Powerpoint Viewer, etc. to allow people who do not have MSOffice to view the files created with these apps. Sorta like Adobe Reader. You, of course, cannot create files in these formats.

    Wait a second...What am I missing. Reverend has Office 2007. Why would he of all people need a converter?

    Steve:

    Exactly. A new version of Word should open docs created in old versions, it should be able to Save them in the old format so the rest of the world can read them and it should do it without complaint and without needing a stack of tools.

    We should be indignant when it doesn't happen.

    For information on unsupported Excel 97-2003 features, see Excel 97-2003 features that are not supported in Office Excel 2007.

    Need to see the Save a file in the Excel 2007 file format sections

    Word 2007 is the KING of the HILL and does Not need any sort of outside assistance.

    Someone with Word 2003 sent him a file....He should be able to open it but can't If Rev were to send the person a 2007 docx file - the other person would need the conversion utility.
