still popular
Hi: Are Spybot S&D and Adaware still as good as they once were? Note they're still at the top of the list on PC World's review, but have seen that neither now, is as good as they were once upon a time. Thoughts! I'm running malwarebytes, super sntispyware, spyware terminator, and avg. But am always on the lookout for something better, or that I ought to be adding to my av/am list. Much thanks, Jim S

Both Adaware and Spybot are past their prime. They will add no significant level of protection to the programs you already have listed above. For what it's worth AVG is, essentially, in the same boat since they introduced version 8. Both Avast and Antivir are better freeware antivirus scanners.

Hi: Thanks for you update. Was going to try avast, but note you have to re-register every so often. Will try the other suggested, and release avg 8. Thanks, again. Jim S

With avast you have to renew the free license every year but it's easy to do.

There is a thread over @ dslreports about how frustrating the update process is for free AntiVir. IMO, Avast is the best free AV now available to us all. Registering every 14 months is a very small price to pay in exchange for what we get...

If you update daily free AntiVir is no problem.
After a couple days, wait until evening, about 6 PM here and it will update.

Make sure, you use AVG Remover: http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools
As for best antispyware programs:
- SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition: http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
- Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (trial version is fully functionable): http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
