Task Mgr says 100% CPU Usage

Every now and then, when surfing mostly, my machine will slow way down as it tries to load a new page.
Slows down to the point of no effect when any key is pushed. Attempting to clear the problem I'll call up Task Mgr (Ctrl,Alt,Del) and after a longish wait Task Mgr will show across the bottom, Processess 31 or 32, CPU Usage 100% and Commit Charge 336 M.

Anyone have an idea as to what this means and what I might be able to do to keep the slow down from happening?

This machine has always done this from time to time. Using Task Mgr to "End Task" clears the task list but still leaves the keyboard unable to effect anything. In which case I have to push the main On/Off button on the tower. After a restart, but before connecting, Task Mgr shows around 31 processes and 0% CPU Usage and a commit chg of around 277.

    Appreciate any help.

    Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

Take the snapshot, when CPU usage is close to 100%.

    Broni,
I will do as you suggest. Just by coincidence I have this day practiced the use of Prt Scr key. I'll try to follow your directions and post the snapshot next time this happens. Thanks for the help and thanks to whomever put this question into the more correct category.

Save As Type: Process Explorer Data (*.TXT) and when I clicked on Save A message box says: Error Saving C:\Windows\Procexp.txt: Access is denied.

Any idea what I should do next?

You don't need to take a screenshot.
Just save Procexp.txt from Process Explorer, when CPU usage is running high.

Since you want to save it as a picture, be sure to paste it inot MS Paint or a Graphics program and save that.

But I cheat now and use Gadwin PrintScreen 4.3 freeware
    http://www.gadwin.com/download/
It saves it as a jpg file as that is how I have it set up.

SuperSparks is who set up that guide.

I understand about it not being necessary to take a screen shot.
I'll give it a go when CPU usage hits the roof again. I may make a test run to make sure I have the methodology correct tomorrow morning.

When the task mgr says 100% cpu usage is the CPU geting hotter each second?

    Thanks for your patience.

It may heats up a little, but nothing serious.

    100% CPU Usage (not yet)

Here we are a couple of days later and the problem has not resurfaced yet.
This is just like when you take your car in to get that strange noise fixed. The car won't make the noise when the mechanic is around.
I'll try again Thursday the tenth.

I have been trying to add the Procexp.txt to this post but I cannot seem to get the attachment to attach.
I believe I have followed your directions to the letter.

    Command Line is now selected.

I have unzipped and run the the program. I clicked on View>Save As and saved the report as Procexp.txt

When "Manage Attachments" was clicked no files would upload from my computer.

Any idea where I am going wrong?

Are you actually going to the file on your computer and putting the file in the upload box? You have to do that so it will upload to this page.

[QUOTE=photolady;1299014]Are you actually going to the file on your computer?

I have clicked Start>Search>Files and Folders in an effort to find it.

    Any suggestions?

I finally found the file. It was in Docs & Settings\Owner in Notepad.

How do I get the file to attach to this message? Procexp.txt (3.6kb) is now listed above the Manage Attachments button in the additional Options box.
