Make sure the ribbon/cable is firmly seated into the hdd.
Kind of sounds like it slipped a bit.

Nah, you will not be open the hdd.

    Hot link
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/su.../c00444244.pdf

Scroll down to page 38/238 and the top reads
"The external components on the bottom of the
HP Compaq nx4800 and Compaq Presario V2000 are shown
below and described in Table 1-15.

That will show you where the cover is.
    5. Hard drive bay - Holds the internal hard drive.

Remove the cover and make sure the ribbon is firmly seated into the hdd.

Now the right model of the laptop might have helped. As there are numeros variation.

That message is sometimes associated with a bad harddrive also.
Since this is a laptop, there is no cable per se, just make sure the harddrive is making good contact to the connector inside. Most likely though this is a bad harddrive and will need to replace the drive.

That is the next step if the ribbon seating does not work.

Laptops don't usually have cables connected to the drive. I'd say it's time to start shopping for a new drive.
