[RESOLVED] Shutdown problem with Error Message
I first started having a problem with Vista hanging on start-up. I finally figured that out by process of elimination, the cause was FireThreat. So I uninstalled it and then had no more problems with hanging while booting up.
Then a few days ago, I installed a new program that C-net sent to me because I was a member of C-net. The program is called "C-net TechTracker". The program scans your computer and tells you all the programs on your computer that is outdated and then provides you the link to use to update the programs. It found 17 outdated programs on my computer. It gives you the choice of which ones you want to update and I only updated 13 of them, didn't need to update the other ones because I update those manually. I also made sure that my Windows was completely updated. I also ran Belarc Advisor to make sure I had not missed any critical security updates. I changed the settings on Cnet TechTracher so that it would not run in my system tray and that it would only run once a week to tell me if I needed any new updates. I don't know if any of this has anything to do with my shut down problems now, but since updating everything with Cnet TechTracker I have found 2 annoying problems. For one thing, my quick launch bar has changed--now I don't have the up & down menu with my quick launch programs, they are all spread out on the quick launch bar--and now what ever I am working on or when I am on the Internet, I have an up & down menu that I have to keep clicking on arrows to go back and forth between, say Word & the Internet. The second annoying problem is that Window's Media Player is now running in my system tray and I can't stop it from running there. Right clicking on it shows no settings in it whatsoever so that I can tell it not to run on startup. Next I used MSCONFIG to go to my startup menu and unchecked it there, applied changes and then the next time I started up my computer, Windows Media Player was right back in my system tray! Now when I shut down as you normally would, I get a slightly blacken screen with an error message in the middle of the screen that says: Explorer.ex-Application Error-The instruction at 0x768f8ed referrenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program. Which I then click OK.
I have no idea what is causing this problem so I can not fix it. Below is information about my computer.

I am so sorry that this was so long, but I am not real computer literate and had no idea what might and what might not help that would enable you with enough information to help me. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Sheila
Note: Before I got this new computer, my old computer used Windows 98SE so Vista is like a foreign language to me! Also, I have a second hard drive (external) that is 1 T and I keep all my data on that drive.

May have fixed one of the problems
Since I posted this problem on August 4, I may have solved the problem. I say "may" because it may start up again in the future some times. But so far, since I uninstalled SpyBot, I have not had a shut down problem and no shut down error messages. Everyone here keeps telling me that SpyBot & Destroy is garbage so I uninstalled it and then downloaded a program that was recommended here: SuperAnti-Spyware--haven't installed it yet because I want to read more about it before installing it so that I can make sure I set it up correctly.
Even though I have seemed to have solved the shut down problem, I still have not been able to fix the Quick Launch bar--should I post that in another forum? It is just driving me crazy since my bottom tool bar now acts like the quick launch bar with the up and down menus for showing the different web pages on the Internet and anything I am working on along with the site. (Some times I like to copy information off a web page and paste it into a Word document).
Thanks,
Sheila

If aI am interpreting your issue correctly, right-click on a blank section of the Taskbar and select Properties. Uncheck the "Group Taskbar buttons".

I did as you suggested and it did not work. This is what all is listed and what is checked & unchecked:
lock the taskbar-checked
Auto hide the taskbar-unchecked
Keep the taskbar on top of other windows--checked
Group similar taskbar buttons--unchecked
Show the Quick Launch --checked
Show Windows preview (thumbnails)-checked
Under the tab that says "Toolbars" all that is checked is Google Desktop and Quick Launch
Under the tab that says "Notification", everything is checked but power and that is grayed out.
Does any of this help to explain my problem? I really don't mind that the items on the quick launch bar are now spread out instead of an up and down menu, (what I was use to before Vista), but in the taskbar is where I am most aggravated with it's up and down menu.
Thanks,
Sheila

Uncheck "Lock the Taskbar" and see what happens.

That was one of the things I did first when first trying to figure this out but it didn't work. But I just tried it again in hopes that something had changed, and it had not--so it still does not help to uncheck lock the task bar. Maybe I should go to MS web site and see if I can find an answer there since this is a Vista product. But thanks for the suggestions anyway.

There is no such thing as overkill. 'Open fire' and 'is it dead?' are the only sane options when threatened.

Yes! That is exactly how everything looks now. As I mentioned before, having the few items I use on my quick launch bar does not bother me being spread out, (not that many of them), but the 3rd picture that you posted is exactly how my task bar now looks and I hate it--it is so inconvenient to me to have it this way!
Is there anything I can do to correct this? I would say maybe it is just a Vista thing, but I have never noticed this before until my quick launch bar changed and then I noticed that my task bar now has the up and down menu!
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

You definitely are not the only person to do that.
Glad you got it the way you want it now.
