You will need to uninstall the total Game.
If the the uninstaller is not in add/remove then it is where it should be more than likely.
Browse to the program files for that game and look for the uninstaller there.
Yes, some programs, to work right, can install quite a few GB of data.

Then he logs into the game on line then.
If true, then I would get rid of them.

Runescape is an online game coded in Java. Your son doesn't need to download anything in order to play this game (As the environment is already installed / JRE )
The files you came across are cache files from the client that is loaded on Runescape's website. These files download everytime the game client is loaded (Or when ever your son logs into the game).
The game doesn't install anything but merely uses these files. These files are NOT! 49Mb in size.
You can delete them but there really is no point as they are cache files. I would suggest not using them at all.
I was a little diss-appointed by how the moderator (Of this site?) Answered your question.
-.- Hell, I even registered for this post...

Correction; The files are only downloaded once, Unless the game updates the cache will be re-downloaded.
*IF* You delete the cache files/Folder the game will re-download them however the next time he logs in.

files
He was here and looged in today again for awhile, today they are 60.4 MB.
I deleted them previously, will do so again., thanks for reminding me.
The moderator got it right just read the whole thread not just one part.
Then he logs into the game on line then.
If true, then I would get rid of them.

I do not game and have no games installed on any of my computers.
If they wish to use their own, I have no problem with that. Fact is, I have helped many a client get games running.

I play runescape, myself and to be honest there should be no reason to delete these files as eachtime the game is logged in from your computer the game servers will resend these files, hence the box saying 'downloading game files', (Z-buffer files and basic direct x files as well as some minor JRE files that enable the game to run).
At the moment Im having some trouble with downloading the updated games as I dont have a broadband internet connection at the moment, so I use my samsung tocco lite as an external modem to connect, its only a 115Kb connection but it does the job most of the time
