[RESOLVED] Event Viewer Service Won't Start
I've never seen or had this happen before .
Went to check Event Viewer today and got an error message that "Event Log Service is Unavailable". Checked Windows Services and sure enough Event Log Service is stopped and won't start. When I try to start it, it gives this error message: "Error 1747:The authentication service is unknown."
I tried a System Restore, but for some reason it wouldn't complete, and no restore was done. (3 different restore points)
I Googled the error message and didn't really come up with anything pertinent.
Anybody have any insight on this issue?
Windows Vista Home Premium.
Thanks,
Paul

Thanks Train.
I actually did see these forum entries and tried the "netsh winsock reset" at the command prompt, and it didn't seem to do anything. I suppose I may have mistyped or something, so I'll try that again.
I did find this topic at that forum to have the most useful information on this issue, but didn't seem to resolve anything....so far.
I'll try these suggestions again and hope for a different outcome .
Thanks again,
Paul

Thanks Broni for reminding me to start with the basics . I will do this when I'm finished with the other suggestions.

This handy little tool has fixed winsock errors for me quite often.....

The only barrier to knowledge is the perception that you already have it.

Thanks TB. I will put this nifty little tool back in my favorites. I had it there a while ago but somehow it got loose.
It seems a System Restore in Safe Mode did the trick. I'm not sure what caused the issue in the first place....which is somewhat troubling to me, but it's back working again. The only things that were installed were Windows Updates on the 9th and 10th this month. I chose a restore point beyond those dates and that did the trick. Of course once Windows opened normally, those same updates were available again. I installed them and everything is still good.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
