Moving files from C: to E: drive

I am trying to free-up space on my C:\drive by moving files from the C:\drive to an external harddrive (E:\). My C:drive with a capcity of 35GB has less than 2GB free. The E:\drive has a capacity of 450GB with more than 400GB free.

My problem: I don’t know how to select the files to move.

FWIW ... I ran a TreeSize Free scan of my C:\ drive and got the results shown in screenshots A and B. A shows the several highest usage folders. B is an expansion of the “15 Files” folder.

    Questions:

    1. I am puzzled by the make up of Attachment B, comprising basic files like autoexec.bat and config.sys and a simple text letter writen in WORD. How did this WORD file get into that folder?

    2. I assume I should NOT move the”15 Files” folder to the E:drive, right?

    3. Also, that I should not move any of the WINDOWS to the E:drive, right?
    huge block <can> I move to E:?

    5. What about the Program Files? Can I safely move them from C: to E: -- iTunes for example (at 200MB)? Will iTunes work if it is in E:?

Your comments, answers, and suggestions are really appreciated. .... wdc

Someone must have specified to save to C:. Or maybe someone accidentally copied/moved them there.

    2. Move or delete the .doc files
    Delete Shortcut to Exercise Time.lnk
    Don't touch anything else.

    3. Do NOT move the Windows folder!
Windows won't boot if you do that.

    5. Do NOT move your Program Files folder either! Most of your apps won't work because the registry entries will be pointing to the wrong location.

You can move the iTunes MEDIA directory. Read this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1364

E: should be used for DATA, not Windows systems files or Programs.
Look in your My Documents folder for files you can move first.

After that you can run Ccleaner or TFC to clean up temp and other unnecessary files.

Disable hibernate if you don't use it.

    1. Click Control Panel

    2. Click Power Options

    3. Select the Hibernate tab

    4. Uncheck Enable Hibernation box to disable

That will give you back space approx equivalent to am't of RAM installed.

Remove service pack and update uninstall folders in XP.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956324

Up to half a Gig space or more restored.

VirtualDr email notices are not working.
    Check back regularly for responses.

Fink: As the Hibernate tab under my CP\Power Management shows Hibernate as unchecked I guess I cannot gain back C-space by eliminating it. But thank you for the suggestion. ...wdc

Click Start > Run, type in:

    cleanmgr

and press [Enter]. Click all of the little boxes on the left to place a checkmark in each one, click OK then Yes. When it's done, reboot and see if it helped.

Midknyte: Thank you for your reminder about TFC and CCleaner. I did try TFC before, but not for some time. When I reran it now I picked up some 600mB!

    Should I also run CCCleaner?

I take your point re using the XP backup and will not fool with it at all.

I will look into one of the Cloud Storage product, like Synform (10Gb for free).. As I read the Synform brochure, I could send much (if not all) the text and photo files on my Cdrive to the Cloud and pickup another few GBs.

Doc: Thanks for the suggestion. I did as instructed but no improvement in free space. I think , after using TFC, I have cleaned out the junk. ,,,wdc

I would still run CCleaner. You can also check the option to remove old Hotfix Uninstallers. Windows > Advanced > check Hotfix Uninstallers.

That's assuming that you don't want to uninstall any Windows Updates. You can just run Analyze and see how much space that would free up.
