    water damage...

There is a hint of life for a friend's laptop. After some water damage, the laptop, while being charged for 30 minutes, turns on for a couple minutes (boots up fine) then just shuts off. The power supply indicator also turns off.

    Any ideas?

I would say it's shorted something, after water gets inside, that tends to happen to most hardware.

The laptop should probably be disassembled, cleaned, and dried. All fans should be checked, and new CPU heatsink compound (Arctic Silver) applied. That MIGHT make it usable again.

The most important thing with water damage is patience. It can take a long time for things to dry out completely, but many electronic gadgets do dry out in the end. It's people being too impatient and turning the device on before it is dry that is usually the death sentence.

I remember reading that putting electronic devices that have gotten wet into a bowl/bag of uncooked rice can help dry it out. You have nothing to loose covering the laptop in rice.
