Modem Question

I have a friend that has as old 486 Packard Bell Computer, he wants to upgrade his modem but the only thing is that it is build into the MB. Is there a way to disable the modem so we can reinstall a new one???? If so how do you do this, details please...

If he has the manual that came with the MoBo then there should be jumpers to disable. Since it is a 486 it probably isn't Plug & Play, so if you can'f find jumpers, then just uninstall the drivers for the modem thru the device manager. Then install the new modem.

I have already done that, when I go to more info, through control panel properties it tell me that there is still conected to 2400 bps, need to get that off so that I can get the new one installed. Thanks for your help in advance. Bill

You might try opening the modem properties in the device manager and put a check in "disable in this hardware profile" and it should free up any resources that it is using or you may check in the CMOS and see if there is an option to disable the intergrated modem. Thankfully I have not had too much experience with packard bell Good luck.

You might be content to just install the new modem and set it so that it doesn't conflict with the other one. IRQ can be the same, but the COM port cannot. Then you can just tell the communications software to use the other port instead.
