    PC very slow to logon

    Dear Broni
You were kind enough to help with my son's laptop. I hope you can help with my family PC? There are 5 password protected user profiles. I connect to a Windows Home Server that we use to access media. Between us we use and connect a TomTom SatNav, Nokia mobile phone, Sony Erikson mobile phone, ipod Nano, ipod shuffle and webcam, though not all at the same time! I have ZoneLabs Security Suite installed, latest version, for software firewall and monitoring antivirus and antispyware. Connects to Linksys Router. The PC is a Dell GX60 Celeron 2.4ghz cpu with 512mb RAM. 40GB HDD with 10GB free space.
Booting up seems to be ok, but then after logging on it takes about 5 minutes for the 'egg timer' to disappear and for the sytem to become usable. I am guessing there is a lot of stuff loading in the background which may not be necessary?
So far, I have run SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, EnGraph QuickTimeKiller and HJT - logs follow.
Please can you help suggest what I can do to speed things up? My wife wants to "quickly logon and check her email" but gets frustrated that it takes longer to logon than it does for her to check it!!!
    Regards, J

Basically, the GMER log is missing, so I'll wait for that.
I doubt, it'll find anything, since Super, and Bytes came pretty clean, but it's better to check it out.

    GMER log is clean.

I'll go back to your HJT log, but...why there is no any antivirus program present?
Also, you'd definitely benefit from getting another 512MB of RAM.

Obviously, malware-wise, the log is clean.
Not too many unnecessary startups, but let's get rid of, what we can.

    *** Download, and run CTFMON-Remover: http://www.gerhard-schlager.at/en/pr...ctfmonremover/
The CTFMON-Remover helps you removing the annoying CTFMON.EXE from your Windows operating system. The program is easy to use and displays whether the CTFMON.EXE is installed and running or not. If it was found then you can remove it within seconds. Just in case that you need the CTFMON sometime in the future there is also an option to restore the original one.
Note:The CTFMON.EXE is among other things responsible for changing the language schema of your keyboard (e.g. for switching between the German and English keyboard layout). So in case you are using this feature you shouldn't remove or disable the CTFMON.EXE!
NOTE. CTFMON.EXE is not a threat, but unnecessary startup, which can't be disabled in any other way.

*** I recommend uninstalling Adobe Acrobat Reader, and replace it with FoxIt: http://www.filehippo.com/download_foxit/changelog/

Open HJT, and checkmark following entries:
    - O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    - O4 - Global Startup: Windows Home Server.lnk = ?
    - O20 - Winlogon Notify: !SASWinLogon - C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SASWINLO.dll

    Click "Fix checked" button.

    Restart computer.

    Hi
I have run CTFMON-remover and removed Adobe Acrobat Reader and replaced it with Foxit, and done what you said with HJT, thanks. Also found 256mb RAM stick not being used so added that too. Thanks for all your help.

    Latest HJT

    Your computer is clean

    1. Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
    Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html.
    Run CCleaner.

    2. Turn off System Restore:

    - Windows XP:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check "Turn off System Restore".
    5. Click Apply.
    6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
    7. Click OK.
    - Windows Vista:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
    4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
    5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
    6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C:")
    7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
    8. Click OK

    3. Restart computer.

    4. Turn System Restore on.

    5. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

    6. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

    7. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

    8. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

    9. Let me know, how your computer is doing.
