    Run
    ipconfig /release
    then run
    ipconfig /renew

That should set your ip to 192.168 sequence.

    Apparently that's not working.
I asked him to turn off the firewall and try again , this is the reply

The Local Area Connection is "Acquiring the Network Address", but that's all it'll do

    Power cycle the modem.

Reach in back and just unplug it. Wait 30 seconds and plug it back in.
When up try getting on line.

They hang once in a while and that normally takes care of th problem.

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
    Power them back on.
    Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

    If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
    cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /registerdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

    Restart computer.

    If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
    cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

    At Command Prompt, type in:
    netsh int ip reset reset.log
    Hit Enter.
    Type in:
    netsh winsock reset catalog
    Hit Enter.

    Restart computer.

    If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/N...nSockFix.shtml
    Restart computer, and check again.

    From friend.
Well, I don't know which one did it, but I'm up and running now. I was on the phone with my ISP and telling them about all of it. He said, "hand on a minute while I check a few things." So I decided to run the setup disc on the router again, and it zipped right through no problems. It must have been one of those things you sent me. I sure do appreciate all your help and your patience with a compu-moron.
And as always i appreciate the help also .
    Thanks
