Have you tried a cd/dvd drive cleaning kit? They cost about 10 bucks...
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

Have cleaned the lazer lens?
Example:
A clean lens and clean CDs/DVDS makes for a pleasant difference.

Do the cds/dvds have clean, unmarred surface?
If yes, then yes it is getting to be that time.

Ok, here is the outcome....I tried a data CD..new...no marks and I cleaned it anyway...it comes up ok
.....I tried a DVD movie...Didnt touch the surface...it comes up and starts playing automatically....
I tried a music CD...cleaned smudges and has a few marks here and there...did NOT come up...
I tried a older game that is already installed ....the CD player does NOT register it...just get a constant read light and game wont play (ITs CIV4 too...waaaa)
I tried to install a game...the cd started and stopped numerous times with a constant amber read light...the game did not install...
is replacement of the cd drive next?

I started having issues with reading CDs/DVDs with an older laptop. I found a replacement drive and had absolutely no issues after I installed it.
If you're not getting the results you want from cleaning the lens and disks, it looks like it's time for a new drive.
