right click on my computer and go to properties. Wherre it says registered to there should be the product key.
In the future I wouldn't ask questions dealing on this sort of subject in this forum. The Moderators don't look kindly to people asking for CD KEYS and the such

I wasn't asking for CD Keys, I have one, just trying to figure out why it doesn't work. I know how to get the info from the register etc... How could a product key from one machine not work in another?

If you are trying to install a retail version OS on a branded machine, no such animal.
Theoran, that is the Product ID number. Product Key is located in the reg. Do a find in the reg for RegisteredOwner(no space) and it will be listed above it.

    From a recent discussion:

I've run across the same thing, not every serial number will work with every Windows CD. Seems as if MS set up the CD security so that "this" batch of CD's will work with "this" batch of serial numbers, but won't work with "that" batch of serial numbers.

    This may actually help.

Put the ORIGINAL MICROSOFT PRODUCT ID CERTIFICATE in front of you. Tilt it 45 degrees away from you. Read the code in that way (it is printed in vertically stretched letters).

If you HAVE WINDOWS INSTALLED on the system already, you MUST use the SAME code that the system was installed with. Otherwise you will get the same INVALID PRODUCT CODE message.

    try this:

If you can get into Safe Mode, open the Registry editor (regedit.exe)

    Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

You should see the key you want under Product Key.
What if there was no such thing as a hypothetical situation?
