    Reading .chk files..

Recently I had a sector go bad in my hard drive, and I ended up renaming about 1300 of my files to filexxx.chk through scandisk. I am missing many important things, such as my desktop...
Is there any program to read these chk files? I have done it in notepad but it looks like a foreign language to me.
    Thank you,
    Solomon

Probably 95% is unusable but you need a hex editor to read it. Here is an oldie but goodie to try: http://www.calweb.com/~webspace/uncheck/index.htm
I never save mine, just say no, and let 'em go. Have had too many experiences with other peoples data trying to recover junk. Good luck.

I would keep an eye on that hard-drive and make sure your backups are up to date, looks like its days are numbered.
    Qualifications:
    I have read:
    Windows 3.11 for Dummies
Windows 95 for Dummies (Second Chapter)

Backup Boogaloo, you know it makes sense to do.

    hi,
    and welcome to VDr
looks to me you may have to run setup over the existing windows installation.
the way I read your message, you cannot start windows, see.

Okay, IF do not have a true full windows cdrom (iow, you have a restore CD)
you may have the installable cabinets on hard drive.
    from dosprompt you run
    cd\
    edit test.txt

put a word in there, maybe "listing"
hit ALT to see the menu, save, and exit the file.
    then run this
    dir *.cab /s /w /p>>test.txt

    then again run
    edit test.txt
you should see the listing of all files ending with CAB

with any luck, you find a directory windows\options\ which has the cabinets

    if it is there
exit out of the edit screen and run
    cd windows\options
    setup

I would like to thank those of you that helped me figure out how to read those chk files, namely Nick Grana, Philgo, and jtdoom. This is directed to jtdoom: I have the damaged drive, which is a Western Digital, plugged into my Quantum as a slave, and that is how I can access these files. Reinstalling Windows was a snap, I think disk 3 is damaged, I couldn't install from that disk, so I skipped those files, and found them on the internet and replaced them where necessary. i still don't know if I can repartition this drive and put it in my 1ghz P3 pc I just built. This was the plan, to take out one of the drives and place in the other pc. So, after filling in the ini file, which was a snap, I found several images, and a few documents. I had about 1300 files to search through, and I did the best I could. I think the others are fragments of files, not real files themselves, and can be deleted.
    Thank you,
    Solomon

    Hi solomon,

****.chk files are indeed hell to knit and stitch together.
Putting that drive in other machine to get the install files on it was good thinking.
Jeesh, how can I be so dense so as not to think of it?
I obviously overlooked that you had a second machine...
    keep on rocking.
    Thanks for heads up.
