    [XP] DVD Drives

I have two DVD Drives in my computer. Both will read 90% of the discs but recently, they will not read some other discs.

I have tried to install updated firmware as well as uninstall and reinstall. Nothing seems to work. I went on googles and did a search on "DVD Drives not reading" and lots of people are experiencing the samething but do not have the real results.

    Process of elimination...
Test unreadable discs in another verified working DVD drive.
    Cheers.

Seems to be the lens are really dirty. Is there a really good lens cleaner? The one that i am using does it sometimes and sometimes it does not do it good enough.

Train, does that clean the lens or the disc? What I am boggled is that both drive can read some discs and cannot read others. It is a consistent pattern which makes me think it might not be because it is dirty.

Wet cleaners use a type of isopropyl alcohol and clean the laser lens on the drive. Also a good idea to use 99% isopropyl(no oil) and cotton balls to clean any fingerprints or crud from the disk too(Bottom). Be sure to wipe the disk from the center to the edge. Not round n' round. A wash with gentle dish detergent can also help by redoing the reflective surface of the disk...
    Stupid question? No such thing!

The tiny brushes on the disk clean the lazer lens.

As Ridge noted, cleaning the disk can really help at times. Might even think about one of those cd cleaning machines. Had to do all three several times and even had to return the dvd about 3 times for a refund. Boy was the store mad when they could not get it to play either.

I am more than sure it has to do with a particular disc because as mentioned before, both drives does well with all disc, except the type that has those swiggles. I think it is Macrovision or DVD-R.

Anyway, is this what you are recommending?

NewEgg gave it bad review and discontinued it.

Do you have a particular brand that you can recommend Train?

    Thanks

In fact I have that RCA lens cleaner which I picked up at a grocery store.
So far it has cleaned 14 cd/dvd burners and 4 stand alones hooked to tv's.
So it is getting time to replace it. Yes the brushes do wear out.
I have not noticed any difference in bronds as any I have bought all worked.

Now the party claiming it does not work, I wonder just how old his cd/dvd device was. If it was old enough not to recognize the cd, then the firmware needed updating or the device replaced.

Train, which grocery story exactly did you bought from? I am looking for it. Frys and Microcenter does not carry it. NewEgg doesn't either. I found it on Amazon.com but shipping is like $10 and never really ordered anything off of there so not sure if it is safe since I have had ID theft before.
