    CD v DVD

    Hi ,
I collect a lot of pics from the net and like ... eventually...
    to store them on cd.
knowing the capacity of a dvd is 2 or 3 times more than
a cd, I thought I d have a go at putting them on dvd.
I found some software that does this and put a couple of thousand pics on the disc.

However on playback.... watching them on a 32 inch lcd TV I dont think the quality is there.... it looks somehow has if the pics have been put on disc at lower quality.

On CDs the pics are always perfect and hi qu
I may be wrong, but the software is sizing the pics down to write them onto DVD

What software, and version, are you using to copy the pics to DVD?

For archiving you should just burn a data disk, but it sounds like your software is creating a slideshow / movie dvd and resizing to dvd resolution, 720x480(ntsc), 720x576 (pal)
    Current PC

    Zoostorm
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, (XP Mode virtual pc enabled)
    WEI 7.4, 7.6, 7.9, 7.9, 5.9
    Intel Core i5-2310, 8GB Ram
    Geforce GTX 660 OC
    Samsung Syncmaster SA300 23.6" monitor

    Folding@home
    User Name Sintares
    Team guru3d

There is no such thing as overkill. 'Open fire' and 'is it dead?' are the only sane options when threatened.

If you are using slideshow software to create the DVD, I have yet to find any that transfers the original images and uses them for the slideshow. They all seem to create movie files of some sort, and you lose resolution. If you actually did transfer the files, it may be the playback software in your DVD player that is the issue. Post the make and model of that as well.

It is prob 7 or 8 weeks ago that I made the dvd disc,
and Ive forgotten exactly what I used.....
but I got the distinct impression that somehow the software was downsizing the quality of my pics .
Played back on the TV the quality did nt seem as good as when
    I use the cd disc.

I suppose my thought at the time was that dvd discs are now cheaper than cd discs.
but since then Ive gone back to using cd discs.

Honestly I dont know why the software should be messing about with the pic file.... if its a 350 meg pic, then put it on at 350meg .... theres plenty of space on a dvd !

But if anyone is doing it with no probs, maybe they could
post a link to the software
dvd discs are now cheaper and more available than cd discs.

Personally, I use the build in burning software in Win7, it does all I need. But as you don't have that options, here's a selection of good, freeware burning software:

I use the built in software in xp, but it does nt seem to handle dvd !

Thinking about it, maybe the software I was using was set to resize the pics
    for some reason.
It might be worth trying some other software ... maybe nero ? and checking out
    the results.
I think Im right in saying that the dvd is just a bigger version of a cd with more space
so really I should be able to write quality jpegs to it and get a good result on the TV

The built-in software in XP only creates CDs if I am not mistaked. It would be a good idea to try Nero if you have that.

An easy test to see what is happening would be to check the file sizes for your images on the hard drive, and then check the file size for the same files on the DVD. If they are not the same, that would be an indication that they may have been modified.

XP only burns cds so you need a program to burn dvds.

    cdburnerxp does just fine.

Just as long as your burner is in this list.
