    two beeps and a blankl

Hi to all: Just finished, about week ago a clean reinstall of Win XP Pro on IBM T43 notebook. Everything seemed fine, sound, internet acccess, programs, speed, etc. Now comes the same computer with two beeps at the logo screen, and blank shutdown. No access to SAFE mode either. Previously, the system was running very, very hot, indicating a plugged heat sink. Did some cleanout with air can and system ran much, much cooler. Even after this treatment at install, the system was running fine. Have no idea what the friend did or might have done, but seems like a hardware issue, maybe memory or???? As always, appreciate the help here. Regards and Merry Christman. Jim S

Remove one stick of ram and try to boot up.
If the same thing happens switch the ram sticks.

    This should help out.

    figured

Hi and thanks: Santa is just about here. Figured the memory might be it. Has 512 aboard, hidden somewhere in the bowels of the unit, and one empty slot which is accessible from beneath the system. Before trying to install a new piece, since I don't know where the existing piece is located, I just tried to press Del to get to CMOS. Fiddled with it, and got message on a boot try, in upper left hand corner: Fan Error, a pause, and then a real life bootup to a familiar desktop. Rebooted a few times and all seems okay. Thoughts? Can that feature be disabled in the CMOS? Do you know the IBM CMOS entry feature, F2, Del, etc.? A bit leary, since from experience I know that fixes don't happen by chance, or do they? I don't want to return the unit, only to have it come back in a few days with the same problem. No overheating present, and the fan, such as it is, is pushing air. Both keyboard and bottom are warm, but not overheating Geez, yah fix one thing and something else goes wrong. Where's Santat, when you really need him? :-) Jim S

    Thoughts.

Sounds like something was goofy in the BIOS and seems to have disappeared.

A bad or precieved bad shutdown can foul things up like that, so keep tabs on it for a while. Maybe just fine now.

That hidden ram like that is a PAIN!

    Talking Torturing it

Hi: Thanks for the note. Will watch it and push it a bit. Seems he used it pretty hard and left little things go, not paying attention. Sooo, it looks good and sounds pretty good, but one never knows. Thanks again, and on to the egg nog! New Year. Jim S
