direct x 9 video card in vista
is vistas direct x 10 backwards compatible and will a direct x 9 card be ok in vista

Yes a older card, as long it is not to old should work.
MX 400 or FX 5200 I would not even think of using.

You can always install and run the Upgrade Advisor to get all the no's n' go' on your hardware...
