    The correct SP3?

I probably should know this, but can you clear it up? I do already have SP3 on my pc. It was automatically installed at the Micosoft Updates site. I recently burned a cd of SP3, but it was an ISO CD Image File. I had to convert or record it using an ISO program so it would be in exe form. Did I say that right? It's 544.9 mb. Wrong one?

I later saw I guess a different version of it at Microsoft and downloaded it. It is 316 mb in size. Before I burn it to cd I need to know what is the difference? What does it mean by Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers? Thank you for clearing that up.

KevinB11--The Windows Update version is based on the usual analysis by WU of what is already on your PC and therefore what needs to be installed. Since much of SP3 is past Updates, if you have been diligent about updating SP2, you have already many or all of them.
The ISO CD Image file is for IT people who wish to create an update CD for Windows XP Service Pack 3 for offline installation by administrators--presumably on multiple PC's.
The 316MB download is just the full SP3 download, usually suggested for people wanting to install SP3 on one PC but for whatever reason not wanting to use Windows Update. Obviously the download will probably take much longer.
I have no idea why the Image CD is so large compared to the "Full Official" 316MB download. Maybe something to do with creating an .iso file on a CD?

The ISO was for burning to a CD and had other "goodies" besides SP3. Sounds like you're ok...

I may not be fully clear on that. According to what Han said I can use the ISO downloaded version I already have on cd. Jim said "The ISO CD Image file is for IT people who wish to create an update CD for Windows XP Service Pack 3 for offline installation by administrators--presumably on multiple PC's". To me you make it sound like the ISO CD Image file does not have the updates with it. But that would'nt make sense, especially with it's large size. I must be wrong.

And so the 316 MB download is really all I need. It has the latest updates up to the making of SP3 which came out earlier this month (or was it earlier?) But of course more updates will be created through time. My pc is set to recieve automatic updates so that's not a problem.

Han said the ISO Image has more with it. Can you tell me the differences or point me somewhere to check it out? I guess it's up to me which one to use. Of course the ISO would certainly take longer to setup with its larger size. Guess I would'nt benefit from it. Thanks again.

Kevin: The Service Pack 3 ISO download is a file that has already been prepared to burn to a CD. In and of itself, it is pretty much useless and anything on it cannot be ran without burning to a CD first.

The ISO contains the Service Pack 3 EXE file, along with a few other items Microsoft thought would be useful (I've not downloaded it so I don't know what the items are.) There is nothing extra to setup if you don't want/need anything else.

IMO, the best reason to burn the CD and keep it is that it's sometimes nice to have a copy of major Windows upgrades stored away. Just as it is with the original Windows CD.

So, to wrap up... If you have the SP3 ISO file burned to a CD, you have the SP3 EXE file, along with a few extras. You should not need anything else.

    **UPDATE**

I downloaded the ISO and burned it to a CD. I attached a screen grab that shows what is listed. (Sparks or Train had also attached a screenie of their ISO earlier but I was too lazy to look it up! )

The WINDOWSXP-KB936929-SP3-X86-ENU.EXE is Service Pack 3. Everything else "extra".

    The ValueAdd folder contains:

Welcome to the Value Added Folder

The Msft folder in the Value Added Folder contains software and associated information that is developed and written by Microsoft. The components in this folder are supported by Microsoft.

The 3rdParty folder in the Value Added Folder contains software and associated information developed and written by other parties. None of the software programs in this section of the Value Added Folder is a Microsoft product, and Microsoft's inclusion of these programs in this Value Added Folder does not imply any endorsement by Microsoft of such programs, any claims made about such programs, or such programs' ability to operate in conjunction with any Microsoft products.

Your rights to use a particular software program included in this section of the Value Added Folder is governed by the end user license agreement accompanying the program. Microsoft does not provide product support of any kind for the software programs included in this section of the Value Added Folder. Such product support, if any, is available from the developer of the software.
Added to the VALUEADD stuff, is a version of .NET Framework and a couple of other things. Chances are you won't need or use anything beyond the service pack itself.

    Thanks HAN,

Well anyway I have both, but I will use the 316 mb SP3 as first choice when the time comes. Appreciate the extra info.
