[Pro] MSCONFIG bye bye
I recently moved my operating system and data to a larger hard drive. Had to do it twice to get everything working.
The only hiccup I have now is that "msconfig" won't run. When I try to start it the hour glass pops up but goes away in a second or two.
I've scanned the drive three different times, both on line and locally for viruses...ng.
I've run "sfc /scannow"...ng
I ran HijackThis but didn't see anything out of the ordinary..
Appreciate any suggestions up to and including Kevorkian's contact info....

Hello kely100
That`s strange if you think the system is clean and system filecheck did not fix it.
Just check again for malware
SUPERAntiSpyware http://www.superantispyware.com/
Download the free version and update it before running
Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
Update it before running.
If all else fails there is this

If it ain't broke, leave it alone.

Navigate to C:\Windows\System32, and see, if msconfig.exe is there.
If it's, try to double click on it.

kely100--Yes, indeed strange that running sfc /scannow and using dougknox did not restore the msconfig.exe file. But since you still do not have it, perhaps try the procedure here
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_msconfig.htm (see the second bold faced section)
And here is a more detail explanation, which is not necessary if the above worked.

kely100, The correct location for msconfig.exe for Windows XP is in the C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries folder. There should also be a copy in your C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder. See if you have the file in the proper location as it does not belong in the C:\Windows\System32 folder.

Tufenuf--Good advice. If it is in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE I am surprised sfc /scannow did not pick it up.

I guess, I was too lazy to switch to XP...I've read the location from Vista. Sorry for that.

You may of had a problem with you path variables, if you type PATH in a command prompt you should see something like this:
PATH=C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\;C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Teleca Shared;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn\
your should be pretty much like this, if you dont have the important windows paths then windows will not know where to look for the commands msconfig when you type it in the run box.
To fix this, go to my computer, right click choose properties, click on Environment Variables, underneath System Variables check under variable you have a "Path" you must have at least :
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;
included, just add a ; to seperate paths that you want run command to scan through when you just type a name of a file.
ie you could add c:\program files\mozilla\ and when you type firefox in the run command, it will find and run the app.

I have a question to add to this since I just found this post after posting =/.
I have the same problem as the OP but in my case, I just installed a new computer.
I found msconfig.exe in the folders specified above but when I click on it, nothing happens still.
Anyone know how to fix this?
