[Pro] Printer freezes XP
I've 2 new Epson Stylus Photo RX595 inkjet printers and the both freeze XP when I plug them into the computer and turn the printer on. The computer freezes immediately, without any delay. Epson "technicians" (in Manila) can only tell me to plug the printer(s) into another computer. Because I may scan/print a document (independent of the computer) the Epson claim is that the problem is my computer.
This printer is not designed to work with 98SE but I tried it anyway and nothing happened. The printer software refuse to install because the OS was not XP. The computer did NOT freeze when I plugged it into 98SE & turned it on.
Do any of you have any ideas? I think I have few choices, as is:
1) Return both new printers and use my clunky old one
2) Buy a new XP disk & pray that the new OS works with the printer.
(Ought I have to buy a new OS to "fix" a printer?)
3) Buy a good b/w printer and a Lightscribe DVD burner.
5) Buy a chisel and some flat stones.
I only bought this printer because Epson printers are (apparently) the only ones that can print labels onto CDs/DVDs.
I be so sad.

Sounds like it may be a bad/shorted USB cable or USB port.
Have you tried a different cable?
What about a different USB port?
Are you plugging the cable directly into a USB port on the computer and not into a USB hub?

Also have a look to see what Device Manager is saying about the printers
Right click My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager
You might have to click View/"Show hidden devices" to get them to show.
Do they have any Yellow splats at them.
Elaine
If it ain't broke, leave it alone.

1) Two fully functional USB cables. I still do not comprehend how a "shorted out" cable would only effect my computer when XP is the OS and not 98SE.
2) Yes.
3) Yes.

No yellow splats. The Device Manager does not show any printer installed as the installation software was frozen when I followed the instruction & plugged the printer into the computer and turned the printer on.

When all else fails, ignore the directions. Uninstall all the printer software and shut down. Plug the printer into the computer USB port and turn it on, then start the computer up - see if the printer is detected. If it is, go from there.

And when you shutdown, wait one minute so the mess in your ram can clear out. Unusual to have it hang, but I have seen it a good many times over the years.

CincyJim--Have you followed the installation instructions for the printer?
Often you first install drivers, etc. from a CD supplied by the printer manufacturer before the printer is connected either to power or to the USB hub.
Jim
WIN7 Ultimate SP1 64bit, IE 11, NTFS,
cable, MS Security Essentials, Windows 7 firewall

Hi CincyJim
If XP only freezes when plugging the printer in while XP is on, try plugging it in and turning it on while it's shut down. Then work from there. Install the software and drivers.

Yeah, it 'detects' the printer and freezes during the XP opening display.

Jim; YES! I've read, re-red, re-re-read the instructions and followed them exactly. About two dozen times.

Even Epson gives up.
I shall return this printer and get a b/w one, perhaps with a separate CD printer or a Lightscribe DVD burner. The Lightscribe still will not be the same as fancy labels on my movie disks.
Boo hoo, boo hoo. I be so sad.

Good news (for me).
IT WORKS! I decided to try the remaining 8 USB ports on a "why not?" basis and the printer did not freeze the computer in the very first (random) USB port I tried! I've successfully printed a colour test page. I'm so proud of that page I think I will frame & hang it! Anybody want a copy for your wall?
Now to get labels for all the movie disk I'm going to make pretty.
Ink cost a lot? Who cares, look how pretty the DVDs will be!
Think I shall pat myself on the back and strut around in front of my girlfriend while showing her the pretty disks.
What difference did the USB port make? Don't ask me.
