Above is a link to the page with white paper for the SP1 release. All of the fixes and additions are listed. Note you can only open the white paper with Word 2007 on your computer as it is in the new docx format.

Open a Word 2007 document in an earlier version of Word
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...444731033.aspx
To open Microsoft Office Word 2007 .docx or .docm files with Microsoft Office Word 2003, Word 2002, or Word 2000, you need to install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint File Formats and any necessary Office updates. By using the Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system, you can open, edit some items, and save Office Word 2007 documents in previous versions of Word.

I stand corrected, educated. Thanks for the link. Won't help me much because I have 2007 at home, Word '97 at work and it is backward compatible only to Word 2000. I still have to save my new docx files as a doc to open them on my PC at work.

Correct ...
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able to open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007.
The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in these new formats. For more information about the Compatibility Pack, see Knowledge Base article 924074.
Note: If you use Microsoft Word 2000 or Microsoft Word 2002 to read or write documents containing complex scripts, please see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925451 for information to enable Word 2007 documents to be displayed correctly in your version of Word.
Users of the Microsoft Office XP and 2003 programs Word, Excel, or PowerPoint ... please install all High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack.

On your Word '97 PC, you might try Word Viewer
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
View, print and copy Word documents, even if you don't have Word installed. This download is a replacement for Word Viewer 2003 and all previous Word Viewer versions.
The Word Viewer, together with the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats, allows you open Word documents saved in the following formats: - Word Document (*.docx)
- Word Macro-Enabled Document (*.docm)
- Rich Text Format (.rtf)
- Text (.txt)
- Web Page formats (.htm, .html, .mht, .mhtml)
- WordPerfect 5.x (.wpd)
- WordPerfect 6.x (.doc, .wpd)
- Works 6.0 (.wps)
- Works 7.0 (.wps)
- XML (.xml)
With Word Viewer and the Compatibility Pack, you can view, print, and copy document contents to another program. However, you cannot edit an open document, save a document, or create a new document.
