Transferring from video from cell phone to computer?

I have a friend who captured 1 hour of a video on her cell phone. She's got a mini SD card. She's not sure how to get that video file to her computer. What is the most likely way to do this. I'm not sure what type of phone she has but I'm thinking there's a generic method of doing this which will probably work. Is any software required to do this?

What file format does a cell camera video usually come in? Does it need to be converted to .avi or .mpg or .wmv in order to be viewed by the PC? Also will software be needed for this conversion?

What kind of media player does she have on her computer...Windows Media Player....Music Match Jukebox...RealPlayer...? Any of these...and others...should be able to play whatever type the cell phone uses. Sometimes, though, there are codecs that need to be added in order to play certain formats.

My daughter sends me short 10 second videos with her cell phone of her 6 month old daughter ( my first grandchild!!!) thru e-mail and I have no trouble playing them.

I did, at one time, have trouble playing a certain business cd but after I downloaded the free codecs I have not had any problems whatsoever.

I'm not up to speed on all of the latest cell phone technology but I wouldn't be surprised if there were a way to connect the cell phone directly to the computer.

Don't know about phone cameras but my Pentax camera works with SD cards. Pictures can be transferred readily ether through USB to camera cable, or by inserting the SD card into the reader. The files from my camera are IMPG.

I transfer files from my phone to computer using Bluetooth. It is slower than using a card reader, but more convenient.
