Could not start the Windows Firewall

All of a sudden I can not start my Windows Firewall service - any ideas why? Here's the error:

Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer.

Error 999: Error performing inpage operation.

Have you tried rebooting the PC? That's sometimes all it needs.

hfctpl--If reboot does not help, have a look at the settings for your Services and see if Windows Firewall/ICS is "Disabled". You access Services from Start|Administrative Tools|Services. Scroll to Windows Firewall and read across to the Status column. (You can change the Status by right clicking on the entry|Properties|drop down menu in "Startup type" line.)
Do you have a third party firewall (such as Zone Alarm) running? This could be preventing Windows Firewall from starting. In ZA's Control Panel for example, click on Firewall (left panel)|Advanced (right panel). Windows Firewall can be disabled there. You should use only one firewall.
If nothing has helped so far, you might try Start|Run|type sfc /scannow|OK. You may be asked for your WinXP CD, so have it ready. This procedure should correct any corrupt files in the operating system.
P.S. I do not know if this reference will help your understanding of the meaning of the error message or not

Cleared Event Logs and tried to start the services again. Event log said "bad block on disk0" - problem solved.
