[Home] Lost my Sound
I don't know what caused it but a couple months ago I lost the sound on my PC. I had XP installed for a couple years. I mess with the settings and install and try a lot of stuff a lot and it wasn't running well and other strange things were occuring so I wrote it off and decided I'd do a fresh install soon and that would hopefully solve the problem. Well, I methodically backed everything up, recorded all of my configuations and did a fresh install.
I'm running an ASUS P4PE mobo and I downloaded all of the latest drivers before I started the re-install. Everything went well and my PC is running like a top again, but the Audio is still not working.
I tried installing the most current Audio drivers from the ASUS website and receive a message:
Severe: Driver not found! reboot your system, and run this setup again.
I also tried installing an older version of the drivers from the original Driver CD that came with the mobo and received the exact same message.
Next, I'll try a safe boot and installing them in safe mode.
Any other ideas? (I have an external sound card I'll also try, but this didn't work either, when I tried it a couple months ago with the problem first occured. I don't have much hope it will work this time either).
Please help.
Thanks!

Go into Device Manager and uninstall the old drivers first, then try reinstalling them.

I tried going into Device Manager last night and uninstalling the device, but it didn't have the option on the drop-down, how do you un-install just the drivers?

If the sound card is showing in DM, then right-click it and select "uninstall". If it isn't showing in DM at all, then that would point to a hardware failure.

I don't know if this makes a difference, but it's on-board sound.
I did try to go into DM and un-install it (as I said in my previous post) but the option isn't in the dropdown list (I never saw that before, is it normal?)

Remove the two drivers via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs...
If applicable,
Install chipset drivers prior to the SoundMAX audio drivers.

As I said, if it doesn't show in DM at all, then it means that the hardware has died. But go into the BIOS Setup and make sure that the onboard audio hasn't somehow been disabled, because that will also prevent the soundcard showing in DM.

The soundcard appears in DM, the un-install option doesn't appear in the drop-down.
I'll try un-installing the drivers via Add/remove programs and installing the chipset drivers (I think I did this, but I'll double check).
I'll also confirm that I'm running the latest BIOS. (I think so, but I'll double check tonite).

Please can you show what it says under Properties, when you right-click in DM. A screenshot would be ideal.

Above screenshot can appear even if there are no properly working audio chip in the system.
If the onboard audio chip was properly detected,
There should have been a unknown device listed with a yellow exclamation mark.
If applicable,
Double check that the onboard audio chip has been enabled via CMOS/BIOS menu.
Cheers.

Well.................. some news, little good (or at least not bad)
I couldn't find any drivers to remove from Device Manager or Add/Remove Programs.
I donwloaded the latest Chipset & BIOS.
I installed the new Chipset drivers.
I successfully loaded the latest BIOS.
And rest the CMOS Defaults.
The bad news, still no sound (and no clue either).
The kinda good news.... the startup voice blared thru the left speaker and scared the b-jesus out of me! (the volume was cranked way up!)
"System boot self-check now completed!!!!!"
So I know the speakers work! (and it is able to output to them)
When I tried to install SoundMax (audio drivers) again, I received the same message
Severe: Driver not found! reboot your system, and run this setup again.

As already mentioned by SuperSparks,
If CMOS/BIOS menu was checked,
Ditto to guess that the onboard audio is defective.
Cheers.

I've been all through the CMOS and couldn't find anything related to the Audio, but I'll check it one more time.
I had my hopes up, since I received the "Power on System Check" audio message through the speakers.
I also tried installing an external sound card and received the same message. This is the same message I received a couple months ago when it first occured and I figured the XP re-install would address the "Driver not found" issue.
