Net Framework corrupted & something running in background

Happy Thanksgiving Weekend all. My auto updated ran today with the problem that "Update to .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 for the .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 x86 (KB963707)" were not installed. Since the updates started to run this afternoon it is running constantly in the background. I can get to pages but the hourglass of something running is always there. How do I fix this net framework problem please? It is really getting annoying. Thanks in advance for your help.

If you go into Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs, and make sure the check box for Show Updates is checked, you should be able to uninstall the Dot Net Framework 3.5 What happens when you try that?

I got an error message that said this patch could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exsists & that you can access it or contact the application vendor.

Also I cannot find what is running in the background. The little hourglass has not gone away since this afternoon. I had some IE error reports while playing games on Facebook & then I was just stuck with something running in b/g. I have gone through my processes & cannot find anything different than usual.

Look into Event Viewer (Start|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer). Click on "System" in the left panel. Do you see RedBall error icon(s) timestamped at the exact time the problem occurred? If so, click on the RedBall. The first message will have some data on what the problem is, but usually it is not too easy to understand. Click the blue go.microsoft.com link. On the next window click the link to send a report to Microsoft. Another window should open (though it may take some time for the information in the right panel to appear) which may offer some more understandable info and maybe even a solution.

Process Explorer should help you determine what is running in the background.

error message that said this patch could not be opened
Of course it is not customary to "open" WinUpdate patches. I understand you mean that Windows Explorer cannot "open" the downloaded file to install it.
What happens if you install the latest Windows Installer Agent and then the standalone NET Framework download?

In spite of everything said about updates, NET Framework 3.5 is a standalone program. You do not need the earlier versions unless you know you have a website that requires it. I think I would uninstall v1.0.

Hi all, Anyone have anymore ideas? I put in the event log hoping someone might be able to catch something going on.

Boot.ini is a hidden file in the root of C:\

Open it using notepad then copy/ paste the contents in your next post.

Most of those are tied to MSFWHLPR and that lead me to:

Which causes me to ask "What firewalls are you running?

OMG.........I ran the dotnet tool again & then ran up dates & it worked. I still have an issue with the invalid boot.ini file on start up......not causing me any problems though just booting from C:\ and a MOM.exe dll problem but other than that the little hourglass is gone and my pc is running much faster. I know the MOM.exe is from my ATI files so can go to website to probably fix that or run the disc either one. It wasn't anything that was bogging down my pc so figured to get it after all this other thing was taken care of. Thanks for all your help. As usual Virtual Dr. Rocks!
