Having trouble hearing movies. Sound volume is too low.

Playing movies on XP computer using Media Center. I set the external speaker volume as high as it can go and click on the volume icon in my sys tray. Set that volume as high as it can go. Still, the volume of my movies is too low. Is there any other volume control that I am overlooking?

    Follow-up:
I hear other things well, e.g., music files and voice dictation transmitted to me attached to email. It is only movies that I am having trouble with.

Sounds like a codec issue to me. Try downloading and installing K-lite from here.

Problem is that when I go to the site, there are 25-30 different choices, with no rhyme nor reason to which should be downloaded. I downloaded the first one and it made the problem worse. Whereas before if I concentrated I could hear moderately well, now I hear even less.
Is there one K-lite I could download which will give me much more volume? Or, of the 25 or so which are at the site, which should I download?

Get the 2.84 standard pack from this page...

Before you do this, uninstall the previous codec that you installed. It will be in your add/remove programs.

Uninstalled the previous codec. Installed the 2.84 standard pack. The first movie was marginally better. The second movie was loud; I had to turn the volume down.

Thanks guys. Looks like it is working.

Cannot now find the 284 standard pack.

Went to the site fink referred me to and downloaded the 284 standard pack on computer 1, which works well. Tried to the do the same thing for computer 2 and cannot now find the 284 standard pack. Yes, I went to the same site, which now shows a 285 standard pack, but not the 284. Downloaded the 285, thinking it was an upgrade over the 284, but 285 standard does not seem to work. Point me in the right direction.

It is an upgrade but that's why I usually get the second latest in case there are any bugs. New ones get released every few weeks so it's unlikely that there's any significant differences between them.

Here are some older versions. Be sure to uninstall the currently installed pack first.

A follow-up for others who might have the same problem.

I downloaded the codec and also downloaded a free file, called an AC3 filter. (Came from the same site as the free codec). Open the movie and the sound was immediately increased.
If nothing else works, try downloading the AC3 filter.

Thanks for letting us know. From what I remember the AC3 codec used to be part of the standard pack. It seems it no longer is and is only included in the full pack.

Be very careful and select to add it in when installing K-lite.
It was a option the last time I installed it.
