[RESOLVED] [XP] Decryption Help Needed!
Recently had to reformat my hard drive and do a fresh install of XP Pro, which was fine as I backed up all my files, software etc. Problem is I have encrypted files which I know the password for, but cannot open due to the encryption software used now being missing! I know it sounds dumb but I think it was something pre-installed when i bought my system (I could encrypt just by right clicking then setting a password). Is there any software available to decrypt files encypted by other programs? As i said I have the passwords. I previously had XP Home.

Hi unseenforce, welcome to Virtual Dr
Any decent encryption software will create files that are effectively uncrackable - there would be no point to it otherwise. What is the file extension of the files? Maybe we can track down the software that created them.
Nick.

Just says filename.jpeg.encrypted. I can remember that the thumbnails used to show a detective/spy guy in a hat; like bogart or someone, under a prohibited red circle?

Gonna be hard to pin down unlesss its popular and someone else uses it.
Was it a freeware tool or did you obtain a licence?
If you select the properties of the file are there any clues there?

It is probably using a technique called steganography if it is a jpeg. Have a look at the list of software at the bottom of this article and see if you can recognise what the app was:

Hi unseenforce,
Any chance you made a drive image as a part of your backup sometime?

Sorry, should've said; the file was a Jpeg anyway. The file extension is filename.encrypted. No clues in the properties either.
