Cannot load minint\system32\biosinfo.inf Error 14
The topic is a mouthful, to be sure. In simple terms...
- PC = Gateway MX 7120 Laptop; 1.5 GB RAM; 100 GB HD; WinXP Media Center 2005; NO floppy drive (stinkin' bean counters)
- Had loaded Ubuntu Linux, but it would not accept the Broadcom 802.11g chipset, so need to whack & restore partition
- Ubuntu created 15 GB partition for self (manual set up)
- Try to start up Recovery Console and get this error message:
Cannot load minint\system32\biosinfo.inf
Error Code 14
Press any key to continue [just where is that friggin Any key?? ]
- folder minint does not exist on HD
- Gateway only included a restore disc , NOT an OS disc.
- Possible solutions?
1) Copy I386 folder to Root and rename it minint and hope it works.
Note: copy of biosinfo.inf is in I386 folder
2) Compare WinXXXP install Cd to WinMedCtr "recover"
disc and delete all files on WinMedeCtr disc not on WinXXXP
disc. After copying WinMedCtr disc to HD, of course.
3) Reformat entire HD, loosing ALL apps, files, settings, etc.
4) Give Notebook to friend to use as anchor on his 32' Ski Ray.
Thank you for your support.

Hi, welcome to VDR, have seen this problem before & a reformat was the only fix, seeing it's a Gateway you might try a recovery by pressing the f2 key during boot up, there is a risk that you will lose all the data that has been installed by you. It should give you two choices after pressing the f2 key, one is to completely wipe the HD & install everything back to factory specs, the other is a low level format that is supposed to save all your data but I have never seen it work that way. Good luck to you. SW

Can't find biosinfo.inf fixed
I did a full system restore . Fortunately, I didn't have very many files I needed to transfer to my other PC. I've complained to Gateway & Microsoft about their inane policy of not allowing a user to access the Recovery Console. For that matter, I've also complained to the FTC and BBB about that idiotic licensing policy. Who knows. Maybe something will come of it, other than headaches and flames.

Just to confirm, the low-level format writes 1's and 0's to the data, and completely wipes it, but makes it harder to get data back, it can be used when you are selling a system and you don't want anyone to get hold of important info from your system, usually after a few LLF's the only way to get data back would be to take the hard drive to a data recovery specialist.

Anyways, glad you are up & running again, figured it would be a full restore hence my warning in my first reply. Also hope your complaints dont fall on deaf ears. SW
