what is the best file extension for making music files as small a possible to share? I want to exchange with my brother and we are at odds with the file extensions. I save my music as mp3 on the harddrive.
If you can get ahold of mp3 editing software you can reduce the side of a mp3 by lowering the bitrate, the higher the bitrate the larger the file. The only problem with this is you'll sacrafice the quality of the music to make the file smaller.

If it doesn't work hit it with a hammer. If hitting it fixes it great! If it breaks, oh well it didn't work anyway.

If I was going to share with my brother (and I will when he finally breaks down and buys a burner), I'd just make copies onto erasable media and send him those. He can then copy them, erase them, record something for me on them and send them back. No .mp3 losses to care about, no wasted CD's (if either doesn't want it, we can just not copy it before erasing).
If you want them as small as possible, I guess .mp3 would be the way to go, but that's up to you.
