Gidgets, Gadgets And More Fandangled Doohickies...

    USB Turntable.

The ION USB deck turns the past into the future. A remarkably rapid march of time has seen the media for music transformed from vinyl to tape to CD and now to MP3. In the headlong rush there's a lot of music that's been left behind, which is where this brilliant piece of kit comes in. Whether you've a stack of old 45s, 33s or even 78s (gawd bless you), you can now convert them to MP3s with this USB Turntable.

Obviously it works like any regular turntable, but plug a USB cable into the back of it and then into your computer, and with the software provided you can convert your vinyl into WAV, WMV and MP3s. You can even plug a tape deck into an auxiliary port and convert your old cassettes.

    Ultimate Geek Watch.

If you've ever had a problem telling the time, then worry no more. The Binary Watch is so completely impossible to use (unless you're a code-head) that not being able to tell the time is no longer a cause for worry, but just perfectly normal behaviour. Of course for those of you who 'get it', the Binary Watch - whilst palpably a watch - is not about telling the time, it's about being carefree and eminently cool. It either says 'I'm sufficiently techno-cool that I can actually tell the time on this thing' or 'I'm so laid back I don't need to know what the time is, but cool lights, huh?'.

Square Binary WatchAs the classic joke goes, 'there are only 10 types of people in the world - those who understand binary, and those who don't' and it doesn't matter if you're a 1 or a 0, it's a unique if slightly daft gizmo whichever way you look at it. Though of course if you look at it upside down, the time will be different. Nevertheless, this is one cool watch. Here's how it works...

    MP3 Headphones.

The Mark Frank Montoya Integrated MP3 Player Headphones (snappy title) are the closest thing to injecting music directly into your skull. This new product is so unique that world renowned Pro Snowboarder, Mark Frank Montoya has selected these as the single hottest product to put his name on. For the first time ever, Skullcandy (exceedingly cool headphone manufacturers - if you didn't already know) introduces a DJ style headset with a built-in, detachable MP3 player. Listen to your music wirelessly through 40mm power drivers, or pull out the player, slide on the battery pack, and transform it into a mini portable MP3 player for use with any headset or through travel speakers! With 512MB of memory, the slide in MP3 player has a backlit LCD display and direct USB upload/download capability. They're rad, hip, cool, and all sorts of other happening words, and the sound is simply gorgeous. No wires and great adaptability make the Skullcandy MP3 headphones the best on the move sound system there is.

    Smokey Amp.

Musicians are very cool. Musicians smoke. They also use equipment called amps. These three undeniable truths of rock have been fused together, by a former custom amp designer at guitar legends Fender, in the form of the very cool Smokey amp. It's a high-performing amp - for its size - housed in a used cigarette carton. A perfect box, mind you, no phone numbers or torn corners.
Smokey Amp A lifetime's appreciation of surgically enhanced models may or may not have induced the makers to inject silicone into the boxes as reinforcement, but it works a treat. One square battery will give you about ten hours of playing time, and there's a 0.5w output into the built-in speaker. Of course, you're not going to play Wembley with one, but a whopping great Marshall doesn't fit in your pocket, does it?

    Candy Grabber.

This mini Candy Grabber is like having your very own diet control method on your desktop - now you have to earn your chocolates! Fairground 'Grabbers' seem just so rigged, so avoid spending £2 failing to pick up a desperately sad looking blue rabbit, and fill your very own Candy Grabber with your favourite sweets. Once you've popped one of the tokens in the slot, you have just one minute and fifteen seconds (but who’s counting) to manoeuvre your grabber into position using the three levers, grab your candy and release it down the shoot. Truly horrible and yet strangely nostalgic carnival music plays while you desperately try to grab stuff, and gets faster and faster as your time runs out. When you do succeed in liberating your sweets, a motion sensor triggers off some tacky but satisfying applause! In order to stop you cheating, the hole in the top through which you load your sweets is too small for sticky little fingers. Of course if you're really bad at it you could just pick the whole thing up, turn it upside down and shake it, but oh the shame![/QUOTE]

    Beer Machine

Ever since pubs started being replaced by 'bars' it's become increasingly difficult to buy a decent pint - and bottled beers seem to be little more than gas and weed killer. In the past homebrew was equally awful, and a lot murkier, but thanks to some astoundingly brilliant Canadians home brewed beer is now dangerously gorgeous and easy to make. The Beer Machine is simplicity itself to use, just add the beer mixture (made from 100% natural ingredients and delightfully free of all those ghastly chemicals.), and in seven to ten days you'll have 17 pints of really excellent beer.

It's fun, it's easy, and boy what a great reward.

    The Premium Chocolate Fountain

Oh sweet heavenly god of chocolate (actually shouldn't that be 'goddess'?) - here is an altar into which we shall dip fruit and marshmallow sacrifices. Except we'll eat them rather than give them to you, but we're sure you'll understand. Whatever you dip into your Chocolate Fountain, it's more fun than watching a sheep juggle, and this awesome piece of brilliance will leave you with a grin the size of Cheshire on your face and the word 'wow' echoing around inside your head. The ultimate party pleaser, this is one heck of a great Chocolate Fountain, and beware, because there are a lot of them about, and most of them are, how can we put this politely (we can't), rubbish. With Chocolate Fountains it's vital that temperature control is precise, that the pump is silent and silky smooth, that the flow tree is plastic and not chrome (the chrome will flake off), and that the chocolate is of the best quality. We flew to the states to hunt down the smoothest flowing, quietest, toughest and best Chocolate Fountain out there, and here it is.

    Retro Mobile Handset

Mobile phones have been getting smaller since their creation but just lately the phone making boffins had a change of heart and came up with this nice and chunky retro mobile handset. It may look like the receiver from a smelly old payphone but this is state-of-the-art phone technology at its very best.
The handset will work with just about every type of phone but certain models will require adaptors (see below).

The retro phone handset is cool so don't let anyone tell you otherwise. And no, you won't look like a plonker walking down the high street using one - honest!

    The Beer Belly

Think of beer guts and you typically think of boozy blokes exposing their builder's cleavage as they lean over to pick up another pork scratching. But you won't once you see the amazing Beerbelly in action. Because although this ingenious device looks just like a spare tyre when worn under clothing, it's actually a hi-tech stealth beer dispenser.

The Beerbelly Made up of an insulated neoprene sling and a polyurethane bladder connected to a drinking tube, the Beerbelly holds up to 2.3 Litres (over four pints) of amber nectar and it will stay cold for hours with the optional freezer pack. Brilliant, eh? Okay, so you'll look a bit podgy when wearing it, but who gives a XXXX when you can surreptitiously swig your favourite brew wherever you may roam.

    Don't Break the Bottle

Possibly the best gift for wine lovers ever invented. Whether you're taking a bottle round to dinner at a friend's house, or giving a good bottle to someone as a present, this is without a doubt the best way to give it.

Don't break the Bottle in actionDon't Break the Bottle is an ingenious puzzle - simply lock the bottle up in the puzzle, and hand it over to the lucky recipient. At first sight it appears laughably simple to open, but first impressions are deceptive. It's hugely entertaining watching the recipient go from cocky to puzzled to deeply frustrated - especially whilst everyone else is chipping in with their advice... "No, loop that bit over there, slip that toggle round the whatsit" etc. They'll feel they deserve every last drop if they do finally manage to crack it. If they don't, aside from you crowing, you can put them out of their misery as it does come with release instructions.

    Powerizers

Run faster, jump higher, move further... embrace the power of gravitational energy with super-charged Powerizers! When the boss told our product testers they were for the high jump, there were a few worried faces. Luckily for them, he was talking about the new Powerizers - the amazing shoe attachments that turn even a gentle jog into an extreme sport. Wearing a pair of Powerizers is like having enhanced, super-strong muscles built into your feet. You'll be amazed at what they can help you do!

    Digital Photo Frame

One of these days you'll look back and laugh at the framed photos currently adorning your home and office. Not because of the highlights in your mullet in that one on the sideboard, but because changing the photo inside involves pulling the frame to pieces, digging out a new pic and…well, you know the drill. Indeed futurologists here at Firebox tell us that old-style photo frames are destined for the scrap heap. The future of frames is digital. But why wait until everyone's wearing identical white jumpsuits to go digital when you can order a Digital Photo Frame right now.

    Skype Phone Converter

This neat little box of tricks takes the signal from your traditional home phone - be it analogue, DECT or even cordless - and converts it into digital data for transmission over the Internet. Clever, eh? Simply attach your uConnect to your regular phone line and your computer's USB port, load up the included Skype software and Bob's your uncle! It's completely idiot-proof and easier than, er, picking up the phone. Skype Phone Convertor Once hooked up, your phone will work just like it always did, but pressing the * key twice will immediately activate Skype, allowing you to natter away for nothing for hours on end. (You'll need Broadband to get the best from uConnect and it goes without saying that your computer has to be switched on to take advantage of the VoIP function).

    Walkie Talkie Watches

These Walkie Talkie Watches are quite literally the handiest pair of walkie talkies around. Not only do the watches have a full clock function, but they're also professional PMR (a slightly easier way of saying Private Mobile Radio-communicators) watches. In fact they are of such high quality that they were sported by the Norwegian Winter Olympic team during last year's Winter Olympics - and if anyone should know about tough communication it's the Norwegians - you try saying "hjelp, jeg vet ikke hvor jeg er" in a high wind and being understood.

The watch design, 3km range and VOX (Voice Activated Operation - oh how they love acronyms) make these walkie talkies ideal for active souls who enjoy hiking, skiing and staying in touch for free when on the move. They have eight channels and 38 sub codes per channel giving you over 300 channel combinations for private conversation. To top that all off, communication is free as there is no licence required.

    Shocking Arm Wrestling

This is the ultimate score settler. The noble pastime of arm wrestling has allowed young men to test their strength and settle arguments in a tried and tested medieval manner. We have added a modern twist with a shock, an electric shock to be precise to the puny loser who will pay for his lack of effort!

    Miss Army Kit

We know that every single item in a girl's handbag is absolutely essential (even that picture of Dr Kovak off ER), but Miss Army Kit is set to become the most indispensable must-have of the lot. That's because this fabulously feminine little multi-tool is crammed with essential implements for the style-conscious girl on the go - and it's barely bigger than your lip gloss!

    Viewsonic Debuts New iPod-Enabled Monitor

Well, the Apple Expo has begun...while everyone places their bets to see just how wrong they were on what the big announcements for this year are, Viewsonic figured it would make an announcement of its own: a new monitor designed to work with your Video iPod.

The new product is called the ViewDock, and will initially come in two widescreen sizes - 19" and 22". A dock for your iPod is molded directly into the base, allowing you a host of options. First, you can use the dock just like a standard dock, to synch and charge your iPod. But the real news comes from the connection's other purpose - a direct connection to use the monitor as the iPod's display, letting you just plop your iPod in to watch some videos. Details on resolution, response time, contrast, etc. are still unknown, as is price. Along with the iPod dock is an 8-in-one card reader and four USB ports. Handy stuff!

i foresee a problem with that TV. the video you put on an ipod video is rather low quality, as the screen is so small, so blowing that up to 22" will not look nice at all!

    Microsoft Wireless Laser 8000

The Wireless Laser Mouse 8000 will sell on its own for $149 and is also bundled with the new cordless desktop keyboard/mouse combo sets. Pressing down on the now-mandatory scroll wheel to activate the middle button launches the Instant Viewer mode that’s enabled through the revised IntelliPoint software (the feature can be remapped to other mice buttons).

On both XP and Vista, the screen displays reduced views of all open application windows and documents aligned to an invisible grid. Unlike Apple’s Expose in Mac OS X, which shows each window in relative sizes, the Instant Viewer assigns each window an equal amount of space. For example, the tall thin pane of Windows Messenger is surrounded by empty space in its allotted square, while a Word or Outlook screen takes up most of its square.

    Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter 8000

Also arriving mid-November and sharing a $149 sticker is the Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000, which Barlow attests is “one is for the road warrior”.It’s a Bluetooth mouse with a second set of buttons on its underbelly. Flick a switch, flip the mouse upside down and it can drive a presentation from the other end of the room (we tested it at 10 metres without fail) while you highlight the most impressive parts of each slide with a laser pointer or draw squiggles using digital ink. The controls also run most media players (such as WMP and iTunes) when it’s time for some downtime.

USBCell: Batteries That Recharge Through USB

Produced by Moixa Energy, USBCELL batteries are simply batteries that recharge from any USB port. They require no separate recharging devices, cradles or cables and can be used exactly like a normal battery. The design itself is rather like a typical memory stick with its flip top lid and they could be set to deliver the same killer blow to the battery market that memory sticks did to floppy discs.

Sony Ericsson Introduces Bluetooth Watch By Fossil

Fossil, Inc. and Sony Ericsson are planning to to roll out several lines of Bluetooth wireless technology-enabled watches.

Fossil will be introducing the ABACUS MobileWear and FOSSIL Caller ID watches and Sony Ericsson will be introducing its own line of jointly developed products. All watches will seamlessly link to most Sony Ericsson Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones.

The companies see the device no longer a timepiece, but a discreet user interface to personal mobile communication that will become an essential part of handling calls and controlling the media player on a mobile phone.

    Kameleon Remote Controls

The hugely popular and brilliant Kameleon remotes just got upgraded. Universal remote controls are not something we normally get excited about, but these are truly the most awesome ones we've ever seen. Say goodbye to a bundle of confusing remotes scattered across the room, all festooned with a million buttons (ok, slight exaggeration), most of whose function is a complete mystery. Now you only need one, blisteringly simple-to-use remote that can handle anything from three to six different devices with consummate ease, and with a clarity that is a joy to even the most inexperienced remote user. Touch-sensitive, the remotes light their electro-luminescent screens when you tap then, and - this is the great bit - they only show the controls you need for the piece of kit you want to use. Press 'TV', and only the TV controls show on the screen, ditto for your VCR, your DVD, satellite or cable, audio and CD player - a brilliant idea beautifully executed.

    Freeview DVD Tablet

The Xoro HSD 7500 Portable DVD Player (rather a mouthful -though not literally please) is a super-portable multimedia player. With a high quality full colour widescreen 7" display (16:9), the Xoro will play DVDs, VCDs, SVCDs, MPEG-1, 2 and 4 Videos, standard audio and MP3 CDs, and display both JPEGs and Kodak Picture CDs. Yes indeed, that makes it a movie player, photo player and music player in one. Not only that, but it also comes with a Freeview DVB-T receiver module which with Auto Channel Scan, Electronic Programme Guide and Teletext, so you can watch T.V. anywhere.

The soft black rubber, slim-line unit also has an in-car charger, power adaptor and carrying case, so you can strap it to the head rest and keep back seat drivers entertained on long car journeys. A USB port allows you to attach MP3 players and cameras to play through the unit, using the Xoro as a stereo and a great digital photo frame to show off your photos. The Xoro is a smooth, side-loading machine complete with its very own remote, making it one of the slickest portable multimedia machines we've ever seen.

    USB Hamster Wheel

What can we say that the headline doesn't? It's a hamster wheel. It connects to a spare USB port. Plug it and and watch that furry sucker run for dear life. Round and round. The clever bit - Hammy matches his pace to your typing speed. The faster your fingers, the quicker the hamster's pace. In short, we have at long last a USB toy your boss will approve. Expect a flurry of frenetic keyboard activity as the nation's office works try to out-type and out-run each other. Hammy can be yours for a mere 25 quid, courtesy of Crazy About Gadgets

    Nokia Aeon

The concept phone, dubbed Aeon, combines two touch-sensitive panels mounted on a fuel-cell power pack. The handset's connectivity and electronics are built into the panels to allow them to be used independendently. When assembled, one panel would operate as the display, the other as the keypad. Since the buttons are entirely virtual, Aeon can flip instantly between a numeric pad for dialling, a text-entry pad for messaging, or a media-player controller.
It's also rumoured to use the new Wibree technology.

    Sooloos Music System

Tired of the limited sound quality of lossy audio compression formats? Want to move up to lossless but don't have the storage capacity for all your albums? If you're sufficiently well-heeled, New York-based Sooloos may just have the music system for you: a 1-3TB, RAID-protected multi-room rig that does away with the computer altogether.Sooloos' music system combines Store, Source and Control units. Stores are your RAID music archive. You can add more units should the 3TB, 6,000-CD capacity of the top-end Store proved too small for you. Stores connect across a network to Source units, which are the playback devices. You can connect up to 32 of them on a single network.

The whole shebang's run from a Control One unit, which not only incorporates a 17in touch-sensitive LCD, but also has a CD drive that's ready to rip your discs into a lossless format. Sooloos also offers Micro and Remote controllers: respectively wired and wireless handheld decks.

Apparently, Sooloos will rip all your discs for you and pre-install them on your system. Since the set-up costs $12,000 upwards, depending on the configuration you choose, we'd hope so too, though mailing 6,000 CDs to Sooloos isn't going to come cheap.

The company also plans to open an online music store, which will sell you a CD bundled with a second disc containing lossless ripped copies of the songs. There's no word yet when the store will open.

    LG Shine

Say hello to Shine, LG's follow-up to the hugely popular Chocolate series: a metal-cased slimline slider that's a mere 1.4cm thick. In place of the usual multi-way control button, the handset uses a scroll bar.

    The silvery aluminium-cased SV420 - it'll also be available as the KV4200 and LV4200 for different South Korean carriers - weighs a mere 115g and measures 9.8 x 5.1 x 1.4cm. It's got a 262,144-colour, 240 x 320 'metal mirror' display and 1GB of on-board memory - plenty for the handset's media playback features and for 128-voice polyphonic ringtones.

LG's fitted the phone with a two-megapixel camera with flash - which can double-up as a torch, the company said. Korean buyers will even get an built in map of the Seoul subway system to help them around.

    iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen

The first iPod Shuffle was something of a surprise. Apple had already said it didn't think too much of Flash-based, low-capacity players, though that's just what the Shuffle was. It didn't even have a screen, unlike so many of its rivals, forcing many an observer to wonder who'd buy the thing. People did though, and the compact player proved remarkably popular...

Did Apple meet a need, or were consumer too awed by the iPod brand? Maybe a little of both, but mostly it hit the right price point. Whatever, the Shuffle found its niche. Even when Apple shipped a comparably capacious Nano, it couldn't bring itself to drop the Shuffle. Quite the reverse, it's since gone on to redesign it completely, this time focusing on getting the size down to pitch the product, true or not, as the world's smallest digital music player.
