    xfx 6600gt wont play video

hi all, just got this card to replace my old geforce4 ti46oo,only to find it wont play video,at all, with any media player you care to mention, winamp, media player 10 etc etc,as soon as i click a video to play the machine almost locks,in task manager cpu hits 100% and the player that is trying to play runs in the high 90's,plays games ok 3dmark03 score is 6800,but just wont play avi's mpeg's etc,i got 300 gig of vid's on this machine so it would be useful if this card would play them!!if i refit the 46oo ti all back to normal, have tried latest drivers but they gave me sli errors(?)so i'm running 77.72,have tried xfx but no reply yet! thanks in advance

That SLI message seems to be a bug in the latest drivers, the message is annoying, but it is harmless. I would definitely try the latest drivers. It might be best to completely uninstall the old ones in Safe Mode first, it sounds as if the drivers may not have spotted the different hardware and that is what is causing the problem.

That SLI error is a bug, and must be ignored for now.

Try the very latest driver (91.xx i believe).

Check dxdiag by going to Start|Run|dxdiag.

And problems in Device Manager? Have you checked BIOS settings?

Try Nick's suggestion for drivers in Safe Mode, and then test it again, and if you have no joy, go back into Safe Mode and test video playback there.

In Safe Mode it uses the plain vanilla VGA drivers only, it only uses the "proper" graphics drivers when you boot into Windows normally. I'm a bit baffled by this one, but it still seems to be a driver issue. The fact that you can play the vids in Safe Mode indicates that it can't be a codec problem, and the fact that it plays games indicates that the hardware of the card is OK. I think I would be inclined to try an over-the-top reinstall of Windows and let all the hardware be redetected from scratch.

"I would be inclined to try an over-the-top reinstall of Windows and let all the hardware be redetected from scratch." do you mean format or reinstall over xp?

I really don't think you need go as far as a format and reinstall. Re-installing over the top should be all that's necessary. Boot up with the XP CD in the drive and let Setup run. Go past the "C" and "R" repair options by presssing Enter just as if you're doing a clean install and you'll eventually get an option to "Repair an existing installation". That's the one you want. If it asks about formatting you've gone wrong, so start over.

You'll get to keep your existing apps & settings, but you need to re-install SP2, Windows Updates & any unsigned drivers afterwards. NOTE: Be aware that you'll lose any protection from Blaster / Sasser type worms. Don't go online without a firewall, whether the built in Windows one or 3rd party.

How to perform a re-install of WinXP

    Repair XP

    WinXP Non-destructive Total Rebuild
